I'll be getting a 2018(Intel) Mac Mini. For the time being I'll connect it to an old Apple Cinema Display. I have a 20" Apple Cinema Display(1680 x 1050) which is an ADC display. I already have an APPLE ADC to DVI adapter so I'll need an HDMI or USB-C to DVI cable.

Which output on the Mini should I use? HDMI or USB-C or is there another one?

Is there a particular adapter I need to support 1680 x 1050?

I was told that using the HDMI on the Mini is more reliable? Is this true?

In the past when using and old Apple Cinema Display and the Apple ADC to DVI adapter I did it via HDMI which worked perfectly.

Lots of posts here about DVI adapters (including Apple's own) not working properly on the 2018 mini HDMI port, something about wrong voltage IIRC. I would go with USB-C.

On my mini late 2018 I’m successfully using both a 30“ Cinema Display (via a usb-c to mini display port adaptor + a dvi adaptor) and a 23” display via an hdmi to dvi adaptor.

It should work for a 20". (That will not work for a 30" though. For that you need a dual-link DVI adapter.)

Also, just 20"? I would find that really restrictive, and bigger models are cheap. I bought a 23" ACD (DVI model) a couple years back for US$75 locally. My primary machine is a 30" though.
I have a 20" and will use it for a short time until I get new monitor.
