I purchased a new Mac Mini today (latest base version from Apple Store). I also purchased an LG 2240 (LED backlit) 22" monitor.

The monitor only has a VGA connection therefore I am using the VGA>Mini Display port converter from apple.

The monitor is generally working fine however the display / quality is very grainy, making the text very hard to read. Also although the text is crisp and jagged in quality.

    Has anyone else experienced similar?
Resolution is currently 1920x1080 @60 Hertz (75 not available at resolution).

    Thanks

Are you sure that it only has VGA input? Sounds kinda ridiculous. VGA is analog thus the quality is worse, not sure is it the cause of your problem

Definitely only has VGA, was quite surprised myself. Would the difference in using VGA rather than DVI cause quality issues as noticeable as this?

It could also be the adaptor you are using. Some of the adaptors have been reported to cause video noise.

I'll try bringing it to the apple shop tomorrow and replacing it.

    Thanks

You really need a better monitor with a digital input, but if you have to use that one, get a high quality VGA cable with shielded connectors.

I'm assuming DVI would possibly cure this problem? (or do you mean HDMI?)

Yes. DVI (and HDMI) are digital while VGA is analog.

    Look harder

Not trying to be annoying; however, your monitor has DVI-D input according to LG specs.

It is almost certainly impossible to by a LED backlit monitor in 2010 that has only analog VGA input.

If you really cannot find a DVI input, I suggest your return your monitor promptly as defective.

    SDV,

It also stated on the box it had a DVI connection and was wall mountable (which it wasn't).

I had checked and double checked and nothing, as I said, which I found quite strange to begin with.

Monitor now returned and replaced with an LG W2361V (DVI / HDMI), much better quality and I am only using VGA (with adapter).

Going to test the HDMI cable now.

I had a think about all this and came to a conclusion. (Maybe right, maybe wrong but it ticks all the boxes)

The monitor that was actually inside the box that you bought was a different spec / model than that shown on the outside of the box. I have no idea how such a thing would happen and my theory goes out the window if you looked on the back of the monitor and checked the numbers against those on the box.

I don't see much difference between text via DVI-D or VGA @ 1920x1200. Maybe if they were side-by-side. It's all fine by me. Maybe time for a new monitor? Dell 2405FPW
