Mac Mini Minidisplayport to HDMI adapter problem - causing BLIPS

My Mac Mini is connected from the Minidisplayport to a Kanex adapter and then to a HDMI-cable to a Philips TV. The Mac-screen blips irregularly when ever the adapter is connected to the Mac. Maybe this problem started after I updated to OS 10.9 - I am not sure. The TV works fine with HDMI from other sources. Maybe I need a driver but is that possible with a Mac?
Please can anyone help?

Might be a defective adapter, or a loose connection. The adapter should be plug-n-play.
