My Mac mini is not letting me set my display settings to 144hz despite the monitor I’m using supporting it. It let me set it when I first plugged it in but then the screen went black and wouldn’t come back . Now I’m stuck with 120 50 and 60 hz as my options, what could be the cause ?

It might be your cable.

My Mac mini 2018 (running Mojave) runs at 144Hz via HDMI cable just fine to a 32" Dell QHD (1440p) monitor either connected directly from the Mac's HDMI port or from my eGPU (Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 580 card). If I use the DisplayPort connector from the eGPU to the monitor, I get the full 165Hz experience.

I don't know if it's a gsync or freesync monitor you have, but my 1440p LG 144hz monitor is gsync/freesync and the only way to get 144hz is to manually disable gsync/freesync in the monitor OSD. Then you can select 144hz in Mac OS. If I enable it in the monitor, I have only 60, 74, or 100hz options.

When I want to use my gaming PC, I have to manually re-enable gsync/freesync each time.

That probably the issue I use it for gaming and have free sync enabled. That’s a bummer.

It's annoying, but it only takes a couple seconds (at least on my monitor) to change the setting. So it's just something I'll have to deal with if I want more than 100hz synced in Mac OS. Hopefully it's not too much hassle in your case.
