How many drives can a mac mini server hold? I am considering a mini server for a desktop and according to the configuration options it can be order with two 750 GB 7200 SATA drives plus a 256 GB for a total of three drives. Is this correct?

Two 2.5" drives. The 256GB SSD option replaces one of the 750GB drives.

I thought so too, where would they put the third drive however I checked with apple both by chat and a phone call and they both advised that the mini server is available with 2 750 GB SATA Drives plus a 256 GB SSD??? Take a look at the configuration page the fourth option down under hard drive options?

I assume they put it where the discrete graphics card goes in the mid-range model.

There is no "card", just a chip on the board.

Anyway pretty that's a screwup, check out the specs page:
Or right there in the store description itself:
And if it had three slots, why wouldn't they have triple HD/SSD options as well?

Who knows, I would agree with you that it is not an option but they insisted that it was, I saved a copy of the chat and was going to send it to apple but could not find where to send it. You would think that they would know what they are selling.

The sales rep you spoke with was very wrong.
Not sure what you can do, but regardless there's only room for 2 internal drives, no matter which configuration/model you buy.

    Not an option any longer

I checked the Apple Site this morning and the configuration for the Mac Mini Server has been changed. It definitely was there yesterday but has been quietly changed so I guess it was a typo after all, they just won't admit it. I thought it was too good to be true but I suppose you can stuff only so much into such a small package.

    2X750GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm + 256GB Solid State Drive

is no longer an option. It has bee changed to read

    750GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm + 256GB Solid State Drive

I believe you since I saw the 2 HDD + 1 SDD option and thought to myself that it was a pretty glaring mistake.

Even the ifixit teardown of the non-server Mini shows that there was only 1 additional port on the logic board for a SATA cable, totaling 2.

I just took the off-the-shelf MM Server.

2 x 500 GB now in RAID 0 and the rest (2 x 2TB) daisy-chained through firewire + one USB 2 TB for Time Machine.

As soon as there is an affordable Thunderbolt solution I will move my HD's there and replace one of the 500 GB's with an SSD.

    Just a thought....
