i'm considering buying a mac mini server to manage the macs in our house

however i'm wondering how noisy it is as it will be in my living room area and i have heard mixed reviews on its noise could anyone with the server edition tell me how loud it is?

It really depends on how well ventilated it is, and if you mess with the fans with SMCFanControl.

I run a Mini Server for my hometown, and while it is in a closet, it is well ventilated, I have also increased the fan speed to 2500RPM minimum, and it is still quite quiet. If however you had it in an Entertainment stand, it would likely get too hot, and the fan would kick up to full speed.

TEG

thanks for the response.

The (my) base mini often runs up to 5500rpm, even when doing fairly basic stuff such as importing photos, secure erase, and copying files etc. It's like a hair dryer. I've had to deal with many at my place of work and they are all the same. There's a fair few other threads on it.

the mini is the loudest mini ever in that it ramps up to 5000 rpm quickly and often. when compared to any intel mac mini 2006 and up.

some of us have set the fans at 2500 rpm so that the mini takes longer to ramp up to high speed.

thanks to everyone who posted i decided to grab one (i will only be using it as a server so i would rather just grab the sb rather than wait for ib) i currently run my gaming computer nearly 24/7 and comparing the noise i don't think it will bother me

Does the Mini have one or two fans? I suspect it got only one, so it should go to higher rpm's faster than, for example, a 15" MBP with two fans, but at the same time it should be quieter. Has anybody a MacBook and a Mini for a quick comparison?

I find the MBP fan spins up a little faster and louder due to the smaller enclosure. I've had the Mini server for a couple weeks and I have to put my ear down to hear the 750GB HD spinning. I rarely hear any fan noise.

Good to hear. Thanks for info, Bluedog54!
