Mac mini server

Hello,

I developed a Call Center web application for a restaurant chain using PHP and MySQL. They process more than 15,000 orders monthly using my system. They are also going to add an online store.

Could a Mac mini (1.6 CD) server handle the load?

A mini should be-able to handle that just fine, just make sure those transaction are spread out over a day and not all at say 1pm correct?...
You should however max out the ram and upgrade the internal HD to 7200RPM...

the processing should be fine but i'd boot from an external firewire enclosure with a decent server rated drive in it (or swap the internal out like Apple2Mac said) - from what i've read most standard drives are not designed to cope with the constant access and constant up-time that a server needs, eps. laptop drives like that in the Mini

I'd be inclined to agree.

I'd also look into some more robust cooling than the standard Mini configuration. Maybe put the mini and the external on little stands so that air can flow freely below them, and invest in a small desktop fan.

About 65% of the orders are done between 11am-1pm and 6pm-8pm.

Yes, they plan to max out the RAM, but Ill tell them about the hard drive. Their other option was a Mac Pro, but I thought it was better the Mac mini because with the same money they could buy an extra Mac mini for backup.

Around 2.7 (15000 / 30 * 0.65 / 2 / 60) orders per second over two hours should be no problem. I don't think there would be a need anything mentioned in this thread (except maybe for the 7200RPM HDD).

With reservations for flawed math at this hour.
