I have a mac mini and a macbook retina with the exact same processor and video hardware. The mac mini has a HDD 500 gig and 4 gig of ram. The mackbook has SSD 256 gig and 8 gig of ram. Other than that they are essentially the same machine.

My macbook is very snappy in every way - internet downloads are fast program loads are fast, etc. etc. It runs great. My mac mini is VERY sluggish. Program loads take forever. INternet down load seem very slow. The mac mini gets almost no use - I took it over from elderly Dad who never uses it all. The HDD is almost empty.

Is this just me getting used to more ram and an SSD on my macbook? Or could something be going wrong. Seems unlikely that a standard mac mini would run this badly. Its really bad.

Agreed, it's the HD. I have the same problem on mine but because I only use mine as an iTunes server for my Apple TV, I haven't done anything to change this.

My 2012 13" MBP does not seem to have this problem but I haven't even owned it a full week yet.

Installing some more ram and an ssd this weekend. We shall see.

I installed OWC 240 gig SSD and 8 gigs of ram the other day. I just finished getting the SSD formatted and I migrated everything from the old HHD to the new SSD using migration assistant. This computer now runs very fast. It will last me a good long time.

Anyone want a used 500gig HHD and 4 gigs of ram for a mac mini?

Thanks all for the good advice.

One suggestion... buy a usb enclosure for the 500GB HD and use it as an external/backup drive. Than RAM unfortunately, is worth pretty much nothing unless someone wants to go back to default.
