The RAM upgrade will make the computer noticably faster; only upgrade the HD if you actually know you're going to need the extra space. (Or, spend $50 for a 3.5" (desktop) hard drive, and $10 for a USB or FireWire external case.)

I would highly suggest upgrading the HD as large as possible...IMHO you can never have enough HD space.

I would hold out on the RAM and upgrade at a later time... but then again I heard that swapping the RAM is sort of a hassel on the Mac Mini's

Regarding the Superdrive... If I were you I would just go all out with the Mac Mini (as in the 80 GB HD, 1 GB Ram, and Superdrive option.... but then again with the same price you could get a Core Duo Mac Mini.... but then the 17 inch iMac wouldn't be that far away in price.....)

I'd do the exact opposite personally. The ram will make more difference to begin with, while it will take him a while to fill the HD. It's also easier to add an external drive later than it is to open the mini and add more ram.

I'm with munckee. Hard drives fail eventually anyway. Ideally the RAM never will. Just get that upgraded and leave the harddrive as-is and save some $. Upgrade the ram, and if you don't think you'll be burning dvd's, don't get the superdrive.
