Have a new Mac Mini, and using new external JBL Speakers. They seem to be 'asleep' most of the time, as I don't hear alerts, and when I begin to play something from a website or iTunes, I have to press the up volume button several times to 'wake' them, then lower to desired level. Once playing, they tend to fade out, and I have to hit the up volume again, then lower. This will happen several times, then they seem to finally stabilize.

I really haven't tested the mac w/o speakers to see if it does this via the internal speaker, somehow I suspect that probably works ok, that it's something else.

I'd suggest trying headphones just to test whether it's what's coming out of the computer or if its how the speakers are dealing with the signal.

You need to determine if the problem is with the speakers or the mac mini. As someone suggested use headphones with the mini and also try out the mini's internal speaker to see if they exhibit the problem.

If you can hook up the speakers to another source do so. If you have an iPod you can try hooking up to them to see if the problem is with the speakers.

One more thing... reseat the audio cable connecting the mac mini and the external speakers together and make sure that it is in all the way.
