I have a late 2102 mini that I boot with an external SSD in a firewire case. Lately, when the computer is sleeping it will act like it has shut itself off. The power light remains on on the computer but the power light on the external drive is out. If I power down the computer and restart it, it will boot up normally. Is my problem likely to be that the SSD is going bad or that the drive case has a problem? Or could it be soemthing else, altogether? thanks for any help.

Have you turned OFF the option to "put hard disks to sleep when possible" in the energy saver preference pane?

Personal experience:
I, too, have a late 2012 Mini that I boot and run from an externally-mounted SSD (in a USB3/SATA dock).
I have energy saver set up as follows:
- computer sleep -- never
- display sleep -- 20 mins
- put hard disks to sleep when possible -- UNchecked

Been running this way for 3+ years now, no sleep/wake problems.

Thanks for the reply. I will check my settings when I get home this evening, but as far as I know nothing has been changed, at least not intentionally. I have been booting and running this computer from the external hard drive since it was new and the problem has just started.
