Apple announced new Mac mini and Mac Studio models last month, with both available to pre-order now. It is the first time in years that Apple has revised its two desktop Macs simultaneously, so which should you choose?

There are now two desktop Macs to choose from following the discontinuation of the Mac Pro, but the prices have moved sharply. The Mac Studio starts at $2,499 and rises to $5,499 for the M5 Ultra model, while the Mac mini starts at $899 with the M6 chip and $1,699 with the M5 Pro.

Those prices come on top of the across-the-board Mac and iPad increases Apple made in June, which took the Mac mini from $599 to $799, the M4 Pro configuration from $1,399 to $1,599, and the Mac Studio from $1,999 to $2,499. The M5 Ultra adds a further $200 to the post-June M3 Ultra price, putting it $1,500 above what the M3 Ultra cost at launch.

Both enclosures carry over unchanged, so the dimensions of the two devices remain radically different, with the Mac Studio dwarfing the Mac mini in every way.

Most customers should choose the M5 Pro Mac mini over the M5 Max Mac Studio, saving $800 on the base models. The gap widens across custom configurations, since the Mac Studio's memory and storage tiers start higher and climb further.

Lovely machines. But I can’t afford the build I would need right now. Maybe next time around with the M7. Or not.

The graphic for this article, along with today being a major Apple announcement day, and my early AM waking up, led me to believe for just a moment that COLOR was coming back to the Macs, because the Mini looks purple.

While a comparison is appreciated, I'm pretty sure these two machines are for completely opposite types of customers lol like 70% of consumers will do just fine with the Mac Mini and will never even come close to using the full power of even a base spec Mac Studio. Given how amazing Apple Silicon is there is no need for most people to get a Studio, just save the money and upgrade the Mac Mini internals instead.

Mac mini vs Mac Studio is really about time. If you don’t have a Mac Studio already you likely don’t need one at all. If you do, and you’re not pressed to upgrade then the work that’s being done on your time isn’t pressing you to upgrade either.

When it comes to time you either have an abundance of it or you simply don’t have enough, when you don’t have enough, you upgrade, to get some more.

It all depends on what you use them for. That M5 Pro Mini is going to last a minimum of 5 years. If you buy that for work that you can invoice, that’s nothing.

Price increases suck but in the grand scheme of things a machine like that is still worth every penny.
 
I paid my Apple dues in my youth. In the ’90s, I was buying every top-shelf Mac that came out and spending a fortune doing it.
My latest purchase is a gorgeous 2019 six-core 27-inch iMac, maxed out with 64GB of RAM. Thanks to a mistake in the listing, the seller comped it, and it arrived looking as new as the day it left the store. I paid $239 shipped.
The 5K resolution is the same as Apple’s current Studio Display. It is truly stunning to look at.

For what I do, internet, email, occasional Photoshop, it’s more computer than I’ll probably ever need. Outside of serious professional video work or something equally demanding, I’m not sure what most people need all this new computing power for.
More power is always nice, and there are certainly people who can put it to good use. But for someone whose needs are more like mine, I’d take a good look at a well equipped older Mac before paying these prices for something new off the shelf.
