I presently have hooked up a Samsung 28" 4K monitor (U28E590D) via an HDMI cable to my Mac mini (2018). When the display works, it works very well. However, there have been numerous occasions, when -- during boot up -- handshaking does not talk place so I'm left with a blank display, and me forcing the Mac to quit (occasionally, switching the monitor on and off does the trick: sometimes not). I'm, perhaps naïvely, thinking that switching the connection from HDMI connection to a Display Port/Thunderbolt 3 connection may alleviate the problem... any thoughts appreciated.

Try a USBc (Mini end) to displayport (display end).

Or possibly a USBc (Mini end) to HDMI (display end).

I had much trouble with the monitor not waking up when it was connected via HDMI. I have not had a single instance of the problem since I switched to a USB-C > DisplayPort cable.

My display is only 2560 X 1440, but it is 75 Hz and apparently the HDMI port can't handle that. I have to use USB-C to DisplayPort. (Or, before my DisplayPort cable arrived, I'd have to plug in my old monitor, sidecar to an iPad, plug in the new monitor, change setting to 60 Hz.)
