My 2011 base model Mini is my only Mac (I've put in a 128GB Crucial M4+8GB of RAM), it gets used for hours each day, all my tv watching, film watching, music listening, web browsing, and some WoW/Diablo 3 time. I also have an iPhone 4.

"I wonder what keeps people from buying the mini."

Probably the fact that it "doesn't look like a real computer"....

If Apple would just put this into a more "PC-like" enclosure, I'll bet more folks would buy it, just for appearance's sake.

I think the Mini case should be a bit larger, but for different reasons:
- Cooling - more air in, more heat out.
- Accessibility - easy access to the drive bays. All it would take is 4 screws and a removable top plate. The product would make adding/replacing the hard drive easy, without having to disassemble the entire computer (and risk damaging the fragile motherboard connectors).

Having said that, I expect to buy a 2012 Mini when they get released, to replace my 2004-vintage PowerMac g4 MDD. The old tower has served me well for more than eight years, but I suspect the Mini will be 'way faster, and a WHOLE lot more quiet!

I can relate! I have a 2003 Power Mac G5 which I need to upgrade. I can't afford to spend the same money on a 2012 Mac Pro that I spent on the G5 :(
Therefore, I think my next Mac will be a Mini. I really wish the 2012 Mini had the case you describe along with a quad core Ivy Bridge chip. OTOH that might make it an x-mac. :D

I'll be replacing my old iMac with Mac Mini, I'll be upgrading it's RAM and adding a SSD drive by my self. I think it will be a fantastic machine for my needs. I just hope Apple upgrades gfx chip and makes easy to install second Drive.

I've been thinking about replacing my 2007 Macbook Pro 2.2 GHz. She's getting a little old and performance isn't up to par. I was set on getting an iMac. However, after reading around I think I am just going to get a Mini. The only apps I really use is iPhoto, Mail, and web browsing. I do run Civilization V (which runs like crap on my MBP). Occasionally iMovie and some other similar type apps.

Would I see significant performance increase with the current Mini over my MBP?

Just got my Mac Mini yesterday. I am very impressed so far. I will be getting my 8gb of ram in the mail today so things can only get better. Even with the 2gbs of ram it runs my steam games awesome. Letting the gf have the mbp for now.

I've used Minis as my sole computer for years (til iPad). I was using my Sony all-in-one 20" PC years ago, (before iMac) and looked over at my then, pretty expensive large HDTV screen, and thought I'd rather use that big screen and get more bang for my HDTV $.
got a Mac Mini, hooked it to my HDTV and never looked back to any desktop.
Love your Minis!
