I just bought a Mac mini M1 and, intermittently, it won't wake up my external display after going to sleep. When that happens, I have to turn the display off and back on manually. Is there a way to fix this or is my device defective? I have read a few threads online about this issue. Is it that common? If so, why doesn't Apple fix it?

I had the issue using HDMI. Switching to the lightning port solved the problem for me at least. This has only been an M1 issue, my 2018 Mini has no such issues.

What cable are you using? What brand?

Just wondering...

When the screen is "asleep", have you tried awakening it by RIGHT-clicking...?
(in lieu of the right-click button, you could also try holding down the control button and clicking the mouse...)

when it happens, i fix it by pressing once the power button on the M1 mini.
there's nothing wrong with the monitor, it blinks fine....waiting....:)

I will add, for my use case, after moving the mouse a few times, I have to wait for about 15-20 seconds, before the monitor (Acer 24" curvered) wakes. At first I used to think the Mac Mini was simply not waking...

Did you upgrade to the latest Macos?
For my use case, I use C-C to connect my mac mini and display, with no issues.

Yes, I have updated the OS to the latest version and the problem was still happening.
But somehow, after a week or two of use, it doesn't do it anymore and now wakes the screen without any issue...
I don't know how to explain this, but I won't complain lol

On my LG 27UL850-W 27 + M1 Mini, the display will not come out from sleep on about 1 out of 3 wake attempts.

I was plugging and unplugging the USB-C video cable to get the display to light up.

What is working for me now, is when the mini wakes up but the display doesn't, is to press Command + Control + Q to immediately lock the machine.

Count to about 10 then wake the machine again by clicking the mouse or pressing a key. It's been a consistent work-around.

Silly to have to go through that, though.
