That seems to be a discontinued item. The 2008wfp has a pretty nice price ($260), but there's no info on its panel type. Do you know what it is?

It is a TN. However, this seems to be a general trend on the market. It will be interesting to see what Apple does. Especially after kicking the 20" iMac to a TN with the last update.

Also, we can talk panels all day. But for most people it simply doesn't matter. Not many are going to pay $599 for a 20" when they can pay less than half that for a display that will be good enough for them.

So I haven't read up much/done much research on this and my dad is looking to get a new MBP (after MW of course) and he is looking to my knowledge for a nice monitor. He was going to buy an ACD but, obviously, I told him not to and another monitor will suffice just perfect.

He's not a power user, but doesn't want any crap P.O.S. "great value" stuff either, if you know what I mean. He can tell the difference between good and bad.

What's a good 20" - 24"er? Personally I've been a fan of Sony, Philips, Samsung. I haven't really seen what LG is like.

I said it before and I'll say it again, the Westinghouse 24" is fantastic, calibrate it right and it's just about as good as any, especially since he won't be doing any photo work or anything. Plus, you'll save yourself 200 bucks.

I'm happy with my Dell 2005FPW, and would go with Dell again for a display. I love the Apple displays but Apple didn't sell a display in my price range when I was shopping.

Prices on good displays continue to drop, and there is more competition these days than ever. Apple displays cost more than some of the competition, but feature nice attractive designs that complement the Mac line of computers. Some competitors like dell offer more pedestrian-looking displays that are cheaper and have a few extra features.

Ive been using a Dell 2005FPW for years and its always been good. It was the model that used the exact same LCD panel but had a better quality backlight than the ACD (and costed $600 less). It is not a TN, I got it before Dell started that crap.

Stay away from TN like the plague (ie the 20" imac), I would gladly pay $200 extra just for an IPS panel since its just so extremely better. Companies seem to be trying to push enthusiasts into buying the bigger monitors (24"+) by making most 22" and below panels TN.

The ACD's are great but no where close to being the best in that price range. Its just too bad that the 20" ACD is probably the last 20" IPS panel around.

LG has a more recent 20" AS-IPS panel. The LM201WE2, http://www.lgphilips-lcd.com/homeContain/jsp/eng/prd/prd200_j_e.jsp

I know nothing about TN vs IPS, but some googling has now enlightened me...my 2005 FPW is almost three years old, so I don't think it is a TN-effect display. Something to look for though.

i have 23" apple and something between 19 and 20 dell, both wide screen. both are great only went with the apple on the g5 mainly for the look and i had some apple credit, but went with the dell for the windows box i set up for the rest of the family and it was free or something close.

When I was purchasing displays for my desktops, originally I was going to go ACD all the way, untill I found the Dell 2407WFP and 3007WFP, I debated for a long time, saw both side by side, and decided for myself that the only real difference between the 2407 and the 23" ACD was the ACD had a slightly pinkish tone vs the 2407's slightly blueish tone on whites, and the ACD 30" vs the 3007, looked identical.

I ended up buying 3 2407's and a 3007. At the time, the 23" ACD was still $1000, and the 30" was $2000 vs the 24" Dell at $479 and 30" at $1300 with free shipping and a 3 year warranty. The Aluminum trim just wasn't worth it to me in terms of cost, and I ended up getting an extra 2407 with the money I saved. The power button on one 2407 broke after a few months, so I called up Dell and they sent me a new monitor before I shipped the old one back. The other displays have all been very hassle free, and make great spare TV's when you're not using the computer.

2407 all the way.
