Yes msn messenger works on my pc downstairs. I got an imac G5. It's brand new i got it on christmas. I guess i could check the settings downstairs but i don't know what I'd be looking for...

And yes I've been installing msn properly. I wait until it's done installing then I'll drag the icon onto my desktop and try to run it and i get the same message every time.

On my pc downstairs we do have an intense firewall which i thought could be the issue but i installed other programs that are working fine so i doubt the firewall is the problem. I really don't know what the problem is or how to fix it.

Is your setup:

| MAC | ---> | PC | ---> | Linksys Router | ---> | Internet |

or

| MAC | ---> | Linksys Router | ---> | Internet |
| PC | ---> | Linksys Router | ---> | Internet |

In the first case, you'll need to open up ports on the PC if you want the Mac to be able to use them.

In the second, the most likely cause is that the Mac Networking preferences haven't been set correctly.

I'm assuming it's a wireless router - When you turned on the Mac, you were probably able to connect as soon as the setup was done... with little or no configuration, but I'm guessing that you probably went through some more steps with the PC. I had trouble for a while with some web pages not loading and my computer claiming that the server could not be found. I knew something was wrong when Google started doing it. I realized that my DNS settings were wrong. Your service provider should provide you with the DNS server addresses you need, although they are often available online. They can be entered in System Preferences -> Network -> (Interface you are using: Airport for wireless) -> TCP/IP -> DNS Servers

Good luck! I hope it helps...

You do not need any extra open firewall ports to run MSN Messenger in text-only mode....

Hmmmm.... This is très weird.

Can you please try this:

Open System Preferences -> Network -> "Assist Me" -> Diagnostics?

If it asks you if you're sure you want to do it, because you already have a working connection, do it anyway. Follow the prompts, and you should end up with a window with all green bubbles on the left, and "Your Internet connection appears to be working correctly" on the right. Is this what you get?

hmm well i have no idea that you two are talking about. I'm really not a computer tech kinda person. Give me graphics and i know everything... otherwise I draw a blank.

I did get aol messenger working so it has to be something to do with msn messenger. I'll try reinstalling it. Hopefully I'll get lucky.

As a matter of interest, on your iMac, are you able to access MSN Web Messenger?

(Despite what it says, it does work in Safari. If it says it has detected a pop-up blocker, go into the Safari menu at the top left of the screen and uncheck "Block pop-up windows".)

If that works fine it is at least a temporary solution while you try and get the proper application working.

OMG! I got it working! Wow that was frustrating but definatly worth it in the end.

I had to go to system preferences and go threw networks, configure, and then assist me.. which brought me to another window that lets you pick diagnostics or assistant. I picked the assistant. My inernet had stopped working a little earlier so after i finished with the assistant my internet was working again. Which is when i discovered that aol messenger was working and then msn started working as well.

I'm so pleased with myself. Thanks for the help everyone :D

Hi,

A few recommendations:

1. On the "System Preferences" click on "Sharing." Then the "Firewall" tab. Make sure that it says "Firewall Off." If that's not the case, press the "Stop" button to turn it off.

2. Try a web messenger just to see what happens: Open Safari, and click on "Safari" on the top menu and uncheck "block pop-up windows" (don't do anything if it's already unchecked). Then go to webmessenger.msn.com. Ignore the "Your web browser is not supported by this version of MSN Web Messenger" message and sign in.

Come and tell us what happens. You might also want to try other MSN clients for Mac here.

Good luck, come back and tell us what happens.

EDIT: Never mind.. you got it working... :)

I hate to dig up an old thread, but I am having the same issues. I have internet connection, not blocking and it still doesn't work. Maybe there is a fix in another thread?

I'm amazed I remember my password.

It's been quite some time since I've been anywhere near active on Macrumors, but I'm guessing that the rules are not much different than those on many forums:

If you have a problem which is not solved by the suggestions found using search, it is better to start a new thread, describing in detail what problems you are having. Since the OP in this thread miraculously solved their problem by repairing their internet connection after it went down, this one is not of much help.

Assuming that you've verified in some other way that you ARE connected to the internet, and followed the suggestions such as using the web-based version of MSN, you should probably start a new thread.

To begin with, give this thread a meaningful title. "HELP!" is not very good. "iTunes crashes when creating a new playlist" is far more helpful (assuming that iTunes is crashing when creating a new playlist). Inside, you will want to explain the steps that you take to reproduce the problem, as well as your attempts so far to fix it.

Assuming someone provides a fix that works, and you find yourself happy, it would be nice if you would thank them while mentioning that your problem was solved by the steps they provided. This way, when someone else has the same problem, they know which instructions to try first.

Good luck!

Exact Same Problem

My parents bought me a Mac as well, but for Christmas a year ago. I managed to get everything up and running perfectly fine, INCLUDING MSN Messenger, but as of a week ago it stopped performing and gave me the error message, "Sign in to Microsoft Messenger failed because the service is not available or you may not be connected to the Internet." I have spent several hours today alone on various Mac troubleshooting sites doing everything they have told me to do. This has included reconnecting my internet, disabling firewall, making messenger allowed on my computer, etc. etc. etc. as well as everything that has been posted on this forum. I have no idea what is going on, and none of my friends with Mac have had these problems. So pretty much, I got the same issue as you :confused:

I think I had that problem sometimes when using MSN for Mac, along with a few other problems, so I used aMSN and then Adium, so much better.

Need help with my msn messenger

Ok, recently I had to re-install my Mac OS 10.3.4 due to a start up crash I was having. I kept all original files in a Previous System file. Everything works with the exception of msn, which keeps giving me the "Sign in to Microsoft Messenger failed because the service is not available or you may not be connected to the Internet" error....every time. I know I have the password correct and that I am signed on to the internet because I can get into my hotmail account no problem.
So, I downloaded Adium because it sounded like a nice upgrade. Too bad that all previous versions wouldn't mount on my OS 10.3.4. So, I downloaded an older version and it won't even open once I install it.

I went further and found a crash log for msn and for Adium. My theory is that my previous library or preferences are interfering with my newly downloaded msn and/or Adium because I get this error:

Command: Adium
Path: /Volumes/Adium X 1.0.5/Adium.app/Contents/MacOS/Adium
Version: ??? (???)
PID: 952
Thread: Unknown

Link (dyld) error:

dyld: /Volumes/Adium X 1.0.5/Adium.app/Contents/MacOS/Adium can't open library: /usr/lib/libgcc_s.1.dylib (No such file or directory, errno = 2)

Does anyone have any clue how I can figure out what to do since the last part of the error says it can't open my library?
**there's no proxy that i know of, no parental settings and no firewall set. I am using the same network settings I always have and msn worked prior to the install.....and then I re-downloaded it and nothing....
Thanks for any help.
