it sound slike what you are missing is off site backup using a cloud based service. It would really suck if you lost one of those volumes and were not able to recover pictures or videos of your kids right?

Good point, my 3rd back-up currently is in the basement far corner spare 2TB HD, once a month I copy everything there. Not "off-site", but 2 floors and different location plan view wise. Ha - means I need to find a cheap 6TB HD for same thing.

A bit off topic -- One more thing:
I have the same I7 2009 27" iMac. I put a 240GB SSD in, replacing the DVD drive (OWC data doubler).

Best upgrade I ever made to any computer!

It gives the computer a new lease on life - much, much faster running everything including big applications, booting etc.

Ok - now you've captured my interest here, as that 2009 iMac really still works fine but if a SDD will enable 2-3+ years more life for $141 what's not to like about that?

I just bought a USB blu-ray burner for $80, so losing that DVD space won't matter to me. Do you load the OsX and all your applications to that?
How does Time Machine treat that vs the still there internal HD volume?

Ok ;
I'm going this route instead....

Will this work for replacing my HD drive in my late 2009 IMAC 27" EMC # 2309?

yes but look up the instructions on how to replace it or have a professional do it for you!. Here is a link to how to do it yourself!

Your 2009 I7 27" iMac has a hard disk with the temperature sensor build into the disk.
If you replace it with anything different you will have the cooling fans spin up to max unless you buy a external temp sensor and connect it to the motherboard.

The speed gain with Hybrid spinning disks is relatively small compared to SSD's.

I have opted to replace the optical drive with the SSD, keeping the spinning disk - thus avoiding all the problems mentioned.

Your SATA interface is only 3G choosing a 6G SSD or Hybrid drive can lead to incompatibilities.

I researched this quite a bit and found the OWC 3G drive to be compatible (running it for 9 month without any issues)

For a friend I put a 960GB M500 SSD in his iMac - that one works well too.
