Hello all- thanks in advance for your reply- I know it may sound strange, but I do not want access to the internet by wifi..... connecting to the internet at my house (picking up a signal) is too distracting as I will waste hours upon hours looking at "things" .....This is where you say "okay, well turn off the airport and problem solved." Yes true, for someone with a higher amount of self-discipline. I know some macs have the card which can be taken out and some where it's sodded in the motherboard. So basically, I'm looking for a mac where it's not sodded in, but the problem is I cant figure out which models are and aren't.

and also, I'm making music with it, not a professional, but need something with a bit of a kick. (Ableton live, good amount of pug-ins)

Thanks again!

Dave

WoW that's quite a step, but I guess it's good if you acknowledge it. Before giving you instructions on gutting your box (if that's even possible) why not just obliterate the drivers such that OS X won't even recognize you have a wifi card installed.

Apple said:
Removing Wi-Fi Support Software
Use the following instructions for removing Airport support. This task requires you to
have administrator privileges.
You can also have an Apple Authorized Technician remove Airport hardware from your
Apple computer.
Important: Repeat these instructions every time a system update is installed.

To remove kernel extensions for AirPort hardware:
1 Open the /System/Library/Extensions folder.
2 Drag the following file to the Trash:
IO80211Family.kext
3 Open Terminal and enter the following command:
$ sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions
The touch command changes the modified date of the /System/Library/Extensions
folder. When the folder has a new modified date, the Extension cache files
(located in /System/Library/) are deleted and rebuilt by Snow Leopard.
4 Choose Finder > Secure Empty Trash to delete the file.
5 Restart the system.
From the command line:
Code:
# -------------------------------------------------------------------
# Securing System Hardware
# -------------------------------------------------------------------
# Removing Wi-Fi Support Software
# -------------------------
# Default setting:
# kext files are installed and loaded.
# Suggested Setting:
# Remove Apple AirPort kernel extensions.
sudo srm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext
# Remove Extensions cache files.
sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions
# Available Settings:
# None
For information about turning AirPort off using launchctl, see “Understanding and
Managing Daemons and Agents” on page 221.

Amazing, the things you read on this forum. Thanks for the perspective check...

good point Eddy- but cant I just install the drivers pretty easily?

Really? Are you surrounded by unprotected wifi signals?

yes- there are two network I can tap into that dont have it password protected. I guess if all the wifi networks were protected with paswords I'd be golden~

I'm sorry OP (and not trying to be a dick), but why don't you show some self-restraint and try not to turn on the airport to watch "stuff"?

I would be worried about logging on to promiscuous networks more than wasting time. That's my opinion.

Nope. If you destroy the kext the only way is to find it and get a new one. I don't know if you'd be able to find that particular kext online but, going through the hassle of reinstalling it wouldn't be that far off from reseating the card in your computer or even just grabbing a USB wifi stick from somewhere.

In effect, you'll have to do a little bit of the work. Nothing can save you from yourself :D

Seriously?

No offence meant but is this a joke thread? If you are worried about joining networks just disable the airport card in your MBP and leave it off. You seem like you won't be happy until you physically rip the card out of your mac.

Also, see a therapist about your porn addiction.

Oh, is that what he meant? I thought he was talking about Thing from the Addams Family and that the reason it was plural was that he was conducting a comparative study of the TV version and of those in the films.

I think different.

One phrase comes to mind with this new clarification:

"Master of your domain"

OP, maybe you should tell your neighbors that having their wireless networks unsecured can result in bad stuff such as loss of private info and them being blamed and sued for stealing Lady Gaga songs even though they only listen to the original Dale Bozzio version. That way your temptation will be removed and you'll be known as a helpful guy in the building/neighborhood.

lol....some funny responses :) not a big fan of lady gaga, nor the adams family......yes believe it or not, not everyone wants to zone out jumping from website to website, looking at facebook pics of people I dont know, etc. As i said, I know my limits as a human being who wants to escape from the daily monotony of life- so eradicating the option helps me to face it- hence not owning TV as well. So yeah, I guess I need to see a therapist about self control, porn, low self-esteem issues, how I secretly hate my father, and a plethera of other issues** appreciate the insights, but appeciate the technical solutions even more-

Cultivate some self-control! It will pay off a lot more than ripping apart your MAC :)

At least you recognize the problem. Most of us ignore it and pretend we can surf the net, write messages on forums, and somehow get work done.

I think Mac OSXs parental controls have a option to disable Internet access.
