Mac Office 2008 not opening files made in Windows

I have an issue with office 08. I have searched the web but cannot find a solution.
Word 08 will not open any .doc or .docx files made on a PC. It is not the double click bug, they will not open through double click, opening word and using the open command or any other method.

I have a file I need to urgently access please help.

Office 08 is fully updated and so is my version of OSX 10.5.4

Help please urgently.

Seems like this is an issue as neither of us could get it to work, yet it works perfectly fine on a pc.

Needs more investigation I think.

I see that you need help. I have a moment. It seems that you have done all the right things so far. You know for sure that the document is a Word file? Have you attempted to open it as a text file to examine the header info?
