this is very useful! thanks! Now only if i can convince my parents...I should probably mention that I'm in 11th grade so I have over a year. Does that change my situation at all?

Yeah, dont buy one now. Wait until next summer when you can get better specs and the school bundle (they usually give you an ipod). If you are already accepted when you order you can probably get the student discount which is hear is pretty good.
Also, do yourself a favor and get a refurb. It has the same warranty and will save you quite a bit of cash.

Agreed. It would be wise to wait till next June. By then you will see a SIGNIFICANT performance boost with mobile Nehalem chips matched with Snow Leopard, likely a RAM and HDD increase, in addition to the new battery technology. Plus, you'll get the latest iPod touch and printer!

So I'm really out of the loop for all the latest apple news...but when should snow leopard be released? Also what is the projected release date for the next generation of the macbook pro?

Snow Leopard will likely be out this fall.

Next MacBook Pro... hard to say, but it'd be a modest update: probably just speed bumps. I'd say late this year, after Snow Leopard.
