I'm having this same problem. I talked to an Apple technician for at least 2 hours over the phone and all he told me to do was to archive and reinstall (which I had told him I already tried 5 days prior to calling in). It didn't work, as I still have been having wireless connectivity issues (airport shows full strength) and kernel panics.

I purchased the new 2.16GHz Macbook and began using it on June 15th. The Kernel Panics and wireless problems began to occur on June 24th.

Here are some entries in the panic.log

There is no Apple store in my area and when I asked the technician if I could have a box sent, he said no. He really wasn't much help at all and now I'm just frustrated and don't want to have to go through all of that again on the phone.

I hope Apple addresses this issue soon if it really is a problem with the 10.4.10 update....

I've been having issues as well ever since 10.4.10. I've never had a problem before that.

Right now, my Internet disconnects for a bit until I click on the airport icon in the taskbar. That seems to refresh whatever needs to be, then my Internet starts again.

I just switched from WEP to WAP after reading this thread, hopefully that will help solve this problem.

thimbleful of fuel on the fire

My MacBook had a kernel panic directly after it's initial reboot after the two restarts following the 10.4.10 update in the house that jack built.

It's been fine since, but I did take a mental note that it happened on the upgrade. And yes, I repaired permissions, yada… yada…yada… And I've noticed the dropped connection a good bit too - like the internets go dead from time to time, especially when I'm accessing a gaggle of tabbed pages at once.

I have yet to experience any issues from the 10.4.10 update thus far. I even downloaded and installed moments after seeing the first version of it announced here on MacRumors.

I guess the only issue I have had is one Safari 3 Beta freeze up in Parallels on Windows XP.

Knock on wood.

I've had problems with WiFi dropping out on my macbook even before 10.4.10. However now i have a problem that although the connection doesn't seem to dropout, the internet seems to drop for a mili second every now and then. So my downloads just stop sometimes and when i'm using remote desktop it drops out.

I'm having the same problem, except i'm on a 17" PowerBook, and it doesn't drop out for a second, it drops out for anywhere from a few minutes to an hour.

I'm having the same problem of kernel panics and dropped network connections. What's interesting is that it only happens at my friend's house. Here at home I never have a problem. He has a 2wire DSL modem/router, I have a linksys cable modem/router.

I really hope that Apple addresses this quickly. I'm actually having to boot into windows at my friend's house to use my computer.(

Is Apple's bug tracker publicly accessible?

You just have to have a developer account (which is free). http://bugreport.apple.com/

The only advice I'd give when reporting bugs there is to be sure to follow their guidelines (linked on the page where you fill out the form) and include as much information as absolutely possible. As a developer myself, one of my biggest frustrations is bug reports with too little information, so I always make sure to be as thorough as possible in my reports.

Same here. And I think it disconnects when my computer is idle and on battery power.

driving me crazy!

Yes, this issue is driving me crazy. It's not just on MacBooks; not sure why the original post focuses there. My wife's iMac and my Powerbook both have the same issue.

It's actually pretty disappointing that Apple bungled this all up. I hope they aren't spread too thin with iPhone & Leopard and all that...

Yup, same problem here on a Macbook Pro 2.16. The only thing I could do is reinstall 10.4.9... Random kernel panics which always showed something about the atheros driver.

I'm happy with 10.4.9 now :p

Me too. Had 3 or 4 a day for a few days and then it went away.

Now I'm having problems with the battery dropping all its charge, so atleast i'm keeping myself busy

I'll add my name to the list of people experiencing this problem.

I had put it down to issues with my new router which I got at around the time of 10.4.10.

I find starting the Network Diagnostic tool that Safari offers when it cannot get a page usually kicks the connection back online. Alternatively attempting to reload the page several times brings it back.

Same problem here, I too thought that it was my router, becuase the dropouts seemed to go away when I restared the router.

I had problems with my wireless this morning. My MacBook (10.4.10) was connected to my wireless network but did not have an internet connection. Other computers (PC's) on the network worked fine. Resetting the MacBook didn't work but restarting the router did. Strange.

'Luckily' this problem doesn't affect me as my MB has never been able to connect with my modem which is not what you expect from a laptop worth €1k+.

I just had the problem tonight! I came home after the Harry Potter premiere and was looking forward to reading my emails... and BAM no internet! All my other applications that don't use the internet were working fine. But when I tried to use iChat, Mail, Safari, etc, it would try to work but then say that the Application was not responding. I sat there on the computer for about 45 minutes... logging out, using another user account, restarting the computer, shutting down the computer.. and nothing worked. Finally I decided to go actually restart the Airport Extreme and FINALLY now it works again. So I guess if this happens again, I should downgrade back down to OS 10.4.9??

P.S. it's my first post here! but long time MacRumors reader. ;) Thanks for everyone's insight!

I'm on a WEP network at home... I have been getting plenty of drops, mysteriously. I guess now i have an update to blame.

I used to get wifi drop-outs every 20 minutes or so so I took my MacBook into the local Apple Store and they suggested moving from WEP to WPA. Once I did that, they were right. No more drop-outs - ever.

I haven't run the .10 update as yet because I primarily use my 'book for music playback and don't want to risk the (perhaps fixed now) speaker pops. This would seem to be another reason not to install it as I don't want to break my now fixed wifi.

Same here. But I thought it was related to the MBP going to sleep; when it wakes up, internet gone, click on airport icon - back on. (WAP2).

I've had the same problems, although only when connected to my school's wireless network not my home wireless network. I had my MBP exchanged so I'm hoping it won't happen with my replacement. I cannot say for certain that it was caused by the upgrade because I've only been a mac user since the upgrade.

I get the drop outs in WPA, so I do not think it is security related.

On Macbidouille (french), they suggest reverting the airport files or definitions or whatever to the 10.4.9. I did not read more into it.

I have wireless-n. I'll try to remove the enabler and reinstall, see if that fixes my issue (no KP though).

Eureka! I just got off the phone with an AppleCare rep like an hour ago. My friend brought me her MacBook, she's having the same problems, getting hard-freeze crashes a few times a day.

Sure enough, when we checked the panic log in the Console, there were 20 entries, 16 of which were related to the Airport driver from within the last two weeks.

His recommendation was to archive and reinstall from the restore disks, and then run software update to get everything up to date. Now that it seems to be related to 10.4.10, I doubt I'll install that again.

we had to do that with my macbook as well. I took it to a Genius bar twice, and the first time the gentleman didn't know what was going on. The second time I had a different guy and he had already run archive installs on 3 machines that day. I took it home and did it myself. The panics have stopped, but my wireless still likes to crap out, even though i didn't put the 10.4.10 back on. But I only have problems when I'm not plugged into a power supply. When it's plugged in, the wireless works fine.

I have a 2wire router, and with a previous airport update, the 2wires had to be changed to WPA in order to connect, so I know its not a security issue. Does anyone have any ideas why it would still be having a problem?

I've been having MacBook Wi-Fi dropouts since the moment I bought it last August and it's quite annoying. I called Apple about it and they said they had never heard of the issue before. I'm glad, about 6 months later, they are finally addressing the issue.

Yeah I have been having the exact sameproblems with my Macbook. At first I thought it was my Netgear router that was causing the drop outs because I had also been having problems accessing Google for some strange reason. I exchanged my Netgear for a Dlink N Router and that fixed the Google problem but made my wifi issues worse...

The problem isn't with the 10.4.10 update, its with the airport updates, for some people though when they install the 10.4.10 combo update, it also installs the airport update. I figured this out because I had to archive and restore for an unrelated reason yesterday and before I installed the updates the internet was working great. I made an effort not to install the aiport updates but when I installed the combo 10.4.10 update, it included those airport updates.
