Same problem with my MacBook 1.83.
I actually begin to hate macs. First I spent 3 months waiting for it to be repaired, then I experience that problem... And new iMac is awful...

Sorry to go slightly O/T but what problems are you having with your new iMac that make it so awful? Does it suffer the same wireless drop out issue?

I'm thinking of getting one but will be using wired network so I can live with the wireless issue on iMac but it is not so much fun on my MacBook.

Genius bar visit yesterday confirmed my frequent kernel panics are caused by 1)the last security update, 2)using battery power, and 3)using my 2Wire modem, which is one of AT&T's default gimme modems and a major pain in the rear.

I seem to experience KPs only when using wireless at home with my 2Wire modem/router. When I'm out in the public, the wireless performs fine and seemingly faster. Am I the only one to experience this? Are only certain makes/models of router causing this problem (in combination with the OS update)?

Right now I'm using in a coffee shop WITHOUT having the power plugged in, and it hasn't given me any problems.

I haven't got a new iMac and am not going to buy it until they make non-glossy screens, but it looks really awful. Right now I would be glad to be happy with iMac G5 and MacBook. I already am happy with iMac G5. Unfortunately, not with MacBook.

Yes, this is what the Apple product specialists have said, that some router and laptop combos seem to cause more of a wireless drop issue than others. Apple wants to hear from us with details on which routers are causing trouble so they can create and test a fix. I, too, have connected to some friends' wireless routers with no trouble and have dropped connections at others.

Are you having kernel panics after installing the 2007-004 Airport update (the one that came out in July that we thought would fix the problem)? That seems to have stopped kernel panics (caused by this issue) for most people but made the wireless drops happen more often for some users, independent of whether on power or battery.

Some routers work, some don't...

With my macbook with 10.4.10, I go over to my gf's house, Netgear 108 wireless and it seems to get ip etc, but just won't really connect even though everything looks fine. I press renew ip and a new ip appears but doesn't work...really was frustrating. I figured it was just the router because at my place with a netgear G it works fine...ohwell hope they fix that asap!

any rumors about the fix date for this?

It is refreshing to know that my new macpro is not the only broken one out there with the frustrating airport issues. Are there any rumors out there in regards to the progress being made to fix this issue?

The most immediate fix (for me, at least) is to install (or re-install) 10.4.9.

Obviously, if you have any software that requires 10.4.10 (which is limited to iWork 08 at present, I believe) then I appreciate that this isn't an option.

Best advice I can offer, I'm afraid.

Cheers

a new convert

So how does one do that? I am a new convert from the dark side, and just received my laptop in June. Thanks for any help!

First of all, a number of people have reported that running this update has fixed the problem:

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airportextremeupdate2007004.html

Give that a go first and see if anything improves.

If that doesn't do the job, then you can download the 10.4.9 installer here:

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1049comboupdateintel.html

You'll get a warning telling you that you have a more up-to-date version installed and that all the existing files will be moved into a folder and saved (which is actually quite handy) but the installer ran just fine for me once I clicked OK.

As I said, if you have iWork 08 installed, then this will not work with 10.4.9, according to Apple, but 10.4.9 should address any issues relating to internet connection over Airport.

Cheers!

hey
i am getting a macbook today (yay!! 2 hours and counting)...dont know if it will come with 10.4.10 or not...
so are you saying that it will be better to not to upgrade to 10.4.10 for wifi?
thanks

Yes, that's what we're saying. Unless you need 10.4.10 for iPhone compatibility (pretty sure that's required), do not upgrade to 10.4.10 yet. Upgrade only as far as 10.4.9 and wait to see if this problem gets truly fixed before upgrading to 10.4.11 if/when it comes out (or if a patch comes out that seems to work others).

Your mileage may vary if you have one of the routers that works with the updates (and only visit friends with similar routers), but you'll be much happier without the updates otherwise.

Where, oh where is this patch, Apple? Pretty please?

What we have here is a failure to communicate

Being a windows user, I am trained to click every update I see and install without question. The airport 2004-007 update essentially killed my airport with respect to my Linksys WRT54gc router (up to date on firmware). I would experience 20-40% packet loss when my SR MBP could find my network, and at other times, it could not even find it despite being within 5 feet of the router. Brought my laptop into a genius bar, and was told to Archive and install, skip the update, and report to apple what type of router I was using

Not a problem, until the KPs started. Same as others, while on battery using a 3rd party router. I created an ADC account and submitted a bug report in perfect format, outlining my problems with 2007-004, and my problems without it thanks to 10.4.10. Here's the best part:

"<GMT30-Aug-2007 22:30:34GMT> Stoney Gamble:
Engineering believes that this issue has been addressed in AirPort
update 2007-004. Please verify with this release, and update this
report with your results."

So what is the solution? After telling them that the update killed my internet, and that 10.4.10 gives me KPs...that's right....install the update that I already mentioned as faulty! Gotta love communication

The immediate solution is to roll back to 10.4.9, as described above, which should do the trick unless you require iPhone compatibility or are running iWork '08.

And, of course, to tell Apple that this was the only way you were able to restore your system to normal operation and that Airport Update did not do the trick!

Cheers

Has anyone heard any updates or news on this? Is Apple still working on it?

Still frustrating here. Might just give in and do the rollback after all; I kept hoping for a real fix instead so I'd know what 10.4.11 would really mean if/when it comes out.

Wireless still a problem

Unfortunately, from what I can tell, none of recent Apple updates have resolved the wireless issues for at least a good number of people--as evidenced by the folks who have been writing in to the various Mac sites, including Apple.com. I am staying "rolled back" to 10.4.9, which is working perfectly fine for me and my partner (I have a MacBook c2d and he has a MacBook Pro c2d--both computers were experiencing the wireless drop outs and kps after the update to 10.4.10 and both are connecting to the internet using an Apple Extreme Base Station N), until a new update is released and I am fairly certain that others are no longer experiencing the wireless issues. It's disappointing but the only sure-fire fix that I am aware of.

Why the hell is this in page 2?! This is a MASSIVE problem. I cannot connect to my network on my core 2 duo macbook. My mini works fine, aswell as 3 other PCs.

Been exchanging phone calls with applecare for the past 3 days. Still no solution. Even left added a new bug to the feedback section on apples site.

You cant.

Only if he can't get his hands on an older copy of Macbook reinstall disks.

My aunt's been having issues w/ her new Macbook and her wireless. We took it to the Apple Store this morning and asked for it to be replaced with a new one. They had the tech look at it first, he said that the router we're using isn't "Apple" so that's 100% the problem with the connection. "It's not Apple's so the issues with the Macbook and wireless isn't Apple's. I just turned the Macbook on and downloaded an HD quicktime file and it hasn't dropped the wireless signal here in the store."

Mac Genius solution: Check the router. Even if the Macbook Pro's and two C2D iMacs are getting full signal, it's not the Macbook. Best bet, purchase an Airport Extreme Base Station.

Thy be the words I will remember with that sMac Genius... if I had the ability to swing an open hand slap... I would. To finish complications, my aunt went and bought the APe Base Station ($179).

My solution: If it still drops, I will bring hell into the store, scold the genius, demand a full refund of the base station, and demand a new Macbook.

:mad:I am too having problems. I just purchased the Airport Extreme Basestation (Gigabit) all the updates have been applied successfully and still getting slow, i mean very slow connection speeds. I did a DSL speed test and I am returning back about 250kb. When I am on my desktop (Win XP) I am getting internet speeds about 2mb. I think it's my actual Airport Card within my MacBook C2D. My question is there a way to unistall the Airport Card and re-install it to see if that would help? I know within Windows it makes a diffrence. Any ideas here? This connection speed is KILLING ME!!

And it's still happening to me too! WRT54G with DD-WRT Mirco. Increasing the Xmit power worked somewhat - was able to have an hour vid chat without it dropping. As of right now I don't know if it's the distance or the macbook. Increased it from 28mW to 115mW.

Apple do not have a bleedin clue how to fix this.

I used the workaround by getting the combo update and replacing files that way. Took me a max of 5 minutes to do and since then its been rock solid. I have removed it a few times to try the latest updates but it just refuses to work then so I do the workaround and its fine.

I'm amazed Apple just can't replace the driver to sort this out once and for all.

new book!

I had this problem too. My wife and I both have macbooks with the same os version. mine would lose all signals once in a while (not just our home signal, but all the other ones it could see too). I had one of the original macbook core duos (not the core 2 duo version) and had to get the motherboard replaced, the speakers, the case, and the dvd burner. So when I brough in this problem, as well as the fan always running extra loud... the mac genius said because I had been so patient with it he was just going to give me a new mac instead! Yay for new macs!!!

Though I realize that doesn't help everyone else. Sorry...
