I know I'm being pedantic, but the name was System 8. Apple didn't use the Mac OS name until pretty recently.
Actually, mon frère, Apple began using Mac OS at the release of Mac OS 7.6.

"With the release of version 7.6 in 1997, Apple officially renamed the operating system "Mac OS", a name which had first appeared on System 7.5.1's boot screen. System 7 was developed for Macs that used the Motorola 680x0 line of processors, but was ported to the PowerPC after Apple adopted the new processor in 1994 with the introduction of the Power Macintosh."

Good news - you would have needed to be correct to be pedantic! 😜

That is simply not true, but they spelled it back the as MacOS, no space as I recall and that is when the logo was originally created for it that we all know. I wish young people would remember history better, but everything today is "re-envisioned history with AR" so cool until you don't actually know anything that's real anymore. :(

Has anybody managed to install Office 98 in this? I have a ton of writing as Word documents in a format that can no longer be opened. It would be a miracle if I can get Word to install. I've found old installers in repositories online, but none will install. Has anyone done anything like this with Macintosh.js or the other emulators out there (Sheepsaver, etc.)
Thanks!

Macintosh.js wraps BasiliskII, a 68k emulator, but Office 98 was PowerPC-only. It runs partly in SheepShaver but not very well.

The best emulator option for Office 98 is Qemu. Emaculation.com has a helpful Qemu page and support forum. The setup is more involved than Macintosh.js, for which the main appeal is everything being pre-installed, but between help at Emaculation and files from Macintosh Garden, it should be manageable!

Not sure what file format you used, but have you tried LibreOffice? I used it to open/convert all my old AppleWorks and ClarisWorks documents. It can open quite a lot of different files including Word 1997-2003.

There was a space.

System 7.5.5, but Mac OS 7.6. That lasted all the way through Mac OS X 10.7 Lion.

Hi,

I love retro Mac stuff so investigated and as you will see from the screenshot below, this is as far as you can get:

The reason for this is that this Mac OS 8 Emulator is presenting itself as running on Motorola 68k hardware, as opposed to the later PowerPC hardware... and Microsoft Office 98 is only built to work on the PowerPC hardware, and as a consequence it will not install - and even if you could bypass the check and force an install, it probably wouldn't work.

I'll tell you what DOES run on this emulator:

My inner nerd is having a blast with all this stuff...

...and for the record, I couldn't get Office 98 working in SheepShaver either - apparently it is a known incompatibility with the way virtual memory is handled, but it may also be due to the fact that SheepShaver emulates a 100Mhz PowerPC processor, but Office 98 wants a minimum of 120MHz.

I'm guessing this app isn't for Mac since it's not showing up on the Mac App Store :(
Whaaaat? There is life beyond the Mac App Store!

The Mac OS 8 emulator is available for Mac, Windows and Linux at the link below. Scroll down the page to find the downloadable installers!

I thought everyone wanted Java to die like Flash? Did I miss the memo?
You are mistaking it with JavaScript. It's worse in any possible way, but hey, for some reason it's cool.
And this isn't even JavaScript, it's WebAssembly, but they say it's JavaScript because WebAssembly allows you to run software written in languages other than JavaScript and that makes it not cool.
Yes, I am serious.

I won’t lie. This makes me want to blow the dust off my Amiga 500 as well. Did a summer’s worth of newspapers and and entire fall of leaves to buy that.

Made my system temp skyrocket to 92 celcius. If anyone plays with it I recommend maxing out your fans or using some third party fan control app!

I know this is really old but I had to respond. The reason why I'm looking is because I'm looking for an emulator compatible with the M4 Mini so I can play my favorite old games.

We called it Finder until System 6 and System 7 and then it started as OS8 and OS9 but many people also said MacOS8 and MacOS9. Then it was OSX while generally speaking it became MacOS. The project names were always hush hush up until some time with OSX. I don't know exactly when.

It was "Macintosh System Software" until around 7.5.2.

I think 7.5.5 (maybe 7.5.3) was the first release that actually shipped on clones. 7.6 then introduced the new startup screen with the Mac OS (including a space and an upper-case M) branding. "About This Macintosh" became "About This Computer".

"Macintosh" also gradually disappeared in favor of just "Mac"; it was the Power Macintosh G3, but the Power Mac G4.

10.0 then went with Mac OS X, which stuck around for a long time. OS X 10.7 Lion dropped "Mac" from the name in some places, and 10.8 Mountain Lion in more places. Finally, macOS 10.12 Sierra introduced the current branding (no space; lower-case m).
