Weird problem I’ve encountered:

2019 Mac Pro, with upgraded 1tb ssd.

have a few pcie nvme drives too

When copying a file between nvme drives, it will slow down and the main Mac ssd will start to fill up quickly, even if the transfers are stopped. CPU usage goes up too, and only a restart seems to stop it.

any idea? Almost seems like a duplicate is being copied somewhere, but not sure what’s going on

Had the same issue on my old 2010 Mac Pro. As far as I know, Apple still doesn't support trim on third party drives. You're gonna need a tool like TRIM Enabler to solve this issue.

So it’s one of the connected nvme drives that is giving this issue?

Cleaning up from your Mac drive caches, application traces, leftovers, trash items, duplicate files, and other junk files frees up drive space and boosts system performance.
