mac os (extended journaled encrypted) missing?

I am trying to password protect a new USB thumb drive in macOS High Sierra and the option for mac os (extended journaled encrypted) is missing from Disk Utility.

What are my options now?

it is there for me. In the view options make sure you have selected show all devices then select the device itself and not a partition as I have in my screenshot.

Yep, did that. No dice...

It is because you have the partition scheme set to MBR. Change it to GUID and you will see all the options.
