How do I stop it from adding a 1 (sometimes a '2') to my external drive volume name?

Also, the extension doesn't show in Finder, just the regular volume name.

But if you 'Get Info' you'll see the append value as part of the volume name.

I see there is an update. Going to see what happens with 13.5

never mind, cancelling update based on search results reporting issues.

anyone?

If I flip the last two characters it WON'T append the volume name.

But as soon as I change the volume name back to what it should be it adds a '1' (in this case)

Where else might the volume name be used in the system that the Finder won't keep the name I want?

There is no error message about volume name already in use or anything like that.

Thanks.

  1. Unmount/eject and physically disconnect the affected drive.
  2. Check /Volumes via e.g. executing ls -al /Volumes in the terminal.
  3. If you see something like /Volumes/your-drive-with-its-original-name in the terminal output from the command, delete this folder.
EDIT: what is the drive’s name?

ok. even the flip in characters has Mac OS appending the volume name 😡

going to try that terminal command now

here is what I get. I have three volumes, the internal drive, an external 5tb and an external 1tb. The 1tb is the one that keeps getting appended from OneBT to OneBT 1

If inside /Volumes a folder with the mounted drive name already exists, macOS will append the name in the form you describe. The diskutil output is informative, but that is a different thing.

If you mount all volumes but the 1Tb drive and check /Volumes, there shouldn’t be a mount point with the name of the 1Tb drive. If there is, it might come from a disk image (e.g. a backup of 1Tb) you have on one of the other drives and which you mounted in the past and because you have you Mac configured to save its state…

another option is, that the 1Tb drives is unmounted (incorrectly) sometimes and the mount point in
/Volumes persists - on remount the name will be appended. But there are a bunch of possibilities here.

What Mac model do you have? Are you using a hub - active or passive?
