I shutdown all my programs each time I turn off my MB Pro for the night. When I boot back up the next day, all the most recent programs I had open launch upon login. I can't find a way to disable it. Re-open windows when logging in is already unchecked when I shutdown. Just weird. Other than that, Catalina runs fine.

The settings for apps that launch at login are in System Preferences > User & Groups > Login Items

I checked there too and there is nothing in there except for Adobe Acrobat Synchronizer. Thanks though.

Are you sure you're quitting the apps and not just closing windows? You're going to the App's menu and selecting Quit?

I command Q all my programs and there are no open program indicators under the programs on the dock. Even then, wouldn't that box to reopen windows being unchecked negate that? I plan to do a full wipe and reload of Catalina, but this weekend I am moving and won't have time. Just annoying.

Don't turn it off.

And why not?

I’m having the same issue. No login items in my settings. Applications all closed before reboot. Then a random set open again on startup.

I have a somewhat similar issue after updating to Catalina. Normally, if I shut down the computer and does not select "Reopen windows when logging back in", no app will launch or open upon next power on. This should be expected behavior. However, now even with that reopen option not selected, the app will reopen when I restart or shut down and turn on the computer again. It seems to be a bug. Hopefully it can be fixed in a near future update.

Also experiencing a similar behavior except that I'm just closing the apps by hitting the red X before shutting down my MacBook Pro. Sometimes when I boot it up no apps launch in the foreground and sometimes I get bombarded by many windows 😆

So what do you do if you’re not hitting the red button and actually using file / quit. Then the same app opens?

The session I end is running no apps. The new session on login opens apps at random.

Same here. It didn't happen in Beta 9, which I was using before installing the final release.

Interesting. Just powered it up and no open windows at all. Only difference, no external monitor plugged in while booting up. I'll try it again in the morning at the office.

That actually brings up another question for me: Whenever I shut down my computer I always select to reopen the apps upon login. But e. g. for the "Things" app that doesn't seem to work properly. The strange thing: I get the black dot under the "Things" app after restarting so it looks like it's running but I have to manually launch it in order for it to be properly opened (only then the icon displays the red badge with the number of items in my "today" list).

Why is this?

Edit: I also had this problem prior to Catalina.
