Does anyone know whether a Mac OS upgrade is typically for a single computer or if it can be used to update 2 macs?

There are two versions, the Single User and 5 User Family Packs. Although nothing can technically stop you from using a Single version on as many computers as you want, you're supposed to buy a copy for every computer.
