Problems with Rise of Nations + 10.4.7

Immediately after updating to 10.4.7, Rise of Nations started crashing within a few mouse clicks of loading the main menu. I've noticed that it sometimes depends on which things I click on in the menu and the options, but no matter what, the game crashes when I start an actual game.

Seems like others are having this issue too: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/25329

Anyone have any luck playing this game while using 10.4.7?

There's a lot of info about how this update can be fixed...

...if you were one of the people who had the update screw things up for you.

There's a thread about this at TUAW and Apple Insider, but without cross posting (and making the MacForums Gods too angry), here are the details:

1) The "first" version of the update was missing some code that affected people's computers in lots of bad ways.
2) To fix you need to re-update your computer, HOWEVER, you may not be able to do this through Software Update. So...
3) You'll need to go to the Apple site and find the update page and download the update that way.
4) To verify that your update is the "newer" version (with the correct code), you can check it's build version once installed. To do this, go to About this Mac->More Info->System Profiler->Software. There you'll see the System version. The newer (updated update) version is build number Mac OS X 10.4.7 (8J2135a). The first, older, corrupted build version is 8J2135 (without the a). Once you install this newer updated update, you should be golden.

Well, I've still got the non-a version on all of my machines, and haven't seen any issues so far. Haven't noticed any major improvements either, though. Everything is just the same. (I'm not trying to minimize the people who have problems, I'm just stating my situation. the fact that there is an 'a' version shows that even Apple agrees that there could be problems.)

Yes, it may work just fine with some Intel Macs. But I agree, if Apple has released a version with an "a" I think that everyone who updated to the non-a version should now upgrade to the "a" version.

It improved my Macbook incredibly over the non-a version. I was about to return (or call AppleCare) my MacBook (my second one due to defects on the first one) because of the horrible performance once I upgraded to 10.4.7.

The "a" version has fixed all of that. My hunch is that since the 10.4.7 upgrade did not include some video code, depending on what version and what piece of hardware you were updating, you probably were seeing many different types of issues related to it (I had awful choppy video). :)

I am surprised that Apple hasn't come out to make sure everyone knows about the new "a" update. Perhaps Software Update will take care of that...:(

version "a"

I read a post about the version "a" update, and I took notice and checked my own setup... I did not have version "a". I went to apple site found what I think is the version "a" installed it - re-started 3 times and it still says I have the first version. Could you possibly post a link to the version "a" and if any, comments on re-installing over the old version, ie: should I reverse or delete the first version - which sounds horribly dangerous

TIA

I had the same problem as junker. Downloaded (manually) what appeared to be the 'a' version, ran it, rebooted and it doesn't show 'a' in About This Mac.

That's depressing. Since updating to 10.4.7 I've had a kernel panic when putting the G5 to sleep (first KP since, 10.2 maybe) AND Safari is back to being crash happy. The last update made Safari stable (was crash happy before) So they screwed it up again. I wish I can go back to the pre-10.4.7 Safari.

update...

Thanks for the info...I guess the fact that I have a PPC is why it doesn't show. Thanks.

Now, I notice an issue in Safari. I used to go to a site (metacafe) to view weird and crazy videos... now the embedded player won't play many of the videos. I NEVER had an issue (i've been going there for at least 6 mos.) until the update. Now, nothing. Just a small entertainment (big use of the web) now taken away.

Thanks apple.

Why - o - why, dont I just stay where I am when all is well, instead of trying to stay abreast of the updates?

I'm so sick of this kind of crap with all OS's. I migrated to Mac about 6 years ago because I enjoyed so many things about the Mac OS, but issue after issue these past years are REALLY tarnishing my opinion.

And with all the issues I see out on the web about the Mac and the OS just really burn my A**!

I feel your pain. 10.4.6...no issues. Even now that I have the right version of 10.4.7 I'm having issues. *sigh* I thought "macs just work". Well, mine isn't quite frankly.

Shut down your Mac and don't turn it on for 15-20 minutes. Unplug everything from your Mac.

After 15-20, start your Mac and plug in all your USBs and then your FireWire. Turn on your HD and it should be recognized.

Cheers.

In addition to this Mail.app still shows BDT as the summer time in the UK, when it's BST, I reported this against 10.4 as well.
Same here. I got the response from Apple "After further investigation it has been determined that this is a known issue, which is currently being investigated by engineering"

How long does it take to change a small piece of text?
