It's highly unlikely that they will come preinstalled with 10.5.7

Macs have only come pre-installed with updated versions of the OS when either the hardware or pre-installed software dictates it.

All current Macs ship with 10.5.6 pre-installed and it is unlikely to change until Apple either update the retail discs from the current 10.5.6 disc to 10.5.7 (not guaranteed, the discs have shipped with 10.5, 10.5.1, 10.5.4 and 10.5.6) or some new software updates require 10.5.7

Software updates are applied to new macs as its released. There is no reason to believe master clone drives in assembly plants weren't already updated several days ago.

As stock is sold, more and more new machines will have 10.5.7 as standard software.

When you get a new iMac, it is recommended that you do a clean install of Leopard?

IIRC I read somewhere that some people don't think that the factory install is very good.

The factory install is identical to what you get from the DVD. The first thing you should do is run software update.

Any way to get a set of 10.5.7 install discs instead of installing 10.5.6 and doing all of the updates during a reload?

Why would 10.5.7 ever come on a disc when it's available via Software Update.

Have you confused 10.5.7 with 10.6 Snow Leopard? For example, people who bought an iMac after iLife 09 launched got an iLife 09 DVD in their box.

You wouldn't get a simple update on a separate disc though, well ... I've not heard of it being bundled with a new Mac.

Depends where your machine comes from, apple are not going to upgrade every computer they have sitting in stock rooms, the first thing you should be doing when you get your new machine is a software update and then it will take place.

When Leopard came out lots of machines still came with Tiger, and a 'drop in' Leopard update (which only worked on machines with Tiger pre-installed).

To answer the OP question, all machines made from today (or maybe a few days ago) at the factory will be 10.5.7, how long those machines take to get to the front of the inventory queue depends where you buy, online or in store etc etc.

    BUT, it doesn't really matter.

My Mac OS X install disc is 10.5.6 and shipped with 10.5.6. He's asking when new Macs will ship with 10.5.7 installed and a disc to match.

Easy. We've been ordering a lot of iMac's at work and the last huge order happened about a week after 10.5.6 was released - all the new iMac's back then came with OS X 10.5.6.

I was talking about retail discs.

The MacBooks before the Unibodies shipped with 10.5.4. When the UB ones came out they shipped with 10.5.5 but the White MacBook and 17" MBP which were not updated at that time still shipped with 10.5.4. Even the 17" which had substantial hardware updates (4GB RAM, bigger HDD and glossy HD screen standard) shipped with 10.5.4.

My original question was about Mac OS X version pre-installed on new shipping machines.

I'm sure most of the current stock still has 10.5.6 installed, in a few weeks they will all come with 10.5.7, especially the custom build orders.
