The way I saw it on MS's website is you have to have a card with 256MB or you won't even be able to see the new aero look...
From the horse's mouth:
" * DirectX 9 class graphics processor that:
o Supports a WDDM Driver.
o Supports Pixel Shader 2.0 in hardware.
o Supports 32 bits per pixel.
* Adequate graphics memory.
o 64 MB of graphics memory to support a single monitor less than 1,310,720 pixels
o 128 MB of graphics memory to support a single monitor at resolutions from 1,310,720 to 2,304,000 pixels
o 256 MB of graphics memory to support a single monitor at resolutions higher than 2,304,000 pixels
o Meets graphics memory bandwidth requirements, as assessed by Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor running on Windows XP"
The only thing that's actually
required for Aero is 64MB (I've used it on a 1.7MP monitor and it works fine, even in unoptimized beta form). The other memory guidelines aren't enforced, unless they decide to execute code every time you change your resolution to reevaluate Aero eligibility.
