Why is MR posting so many of these updates in front page news each time they are released? 10.6.5 will be here when it gets here.
I was thinking the same thing! For a moment, I thought I was experiencing dejavu. Maybe it's because this has little importance to me as I'm not a developer and there hasn't been any big news today either.

The public release of Mac OS X 10.6.5 is expected to come nearly simultaneously with a release of iOS 4.2, as Mac OS X 10.6.5 is required to support certain aspects of the AirPrint functionality coming in iOS 4.2.

Does this mean Leopard won't support AirPlay at all? Damn it, Apple... :(

getting it right

While i want it to be bug free when it comes out I know that its never 100% bug free. There is always some minor issue or development compromise. I predict this coming sunday for public release.

I hear ya! I saw the writing on the wall and upgraded three weeks ago from Leopard to Snow Leopard in anticipation of the enhancements in iOS 4.2, compatibility with iLife '11, and the forthcoming Mac App Store and apps. It was time anyway.

Wow I wonder what's up with these builds that they have no known issues, yet they keep on coming!

Can't wait till we get 10.6.5 and iTunes 10.1 so I can actually see AirPrint in action!

The point of beta releases is to get developers to thoroughly test the builds before releasing them to the public.

"no known issues" means that apple is not aware of any more bugs in the release, so as far as their testing has shown them the build is ready to go. UNLESS a developers spots somethings else that's not quite right and tells apple about it.

Then they fix it and come back with another build which as far as they can tell has no more known issues.

The story repeats itself until no more bugs are spotted by apple or the devs.

Just buy the upgrade man. It's cheap, and you'll be happy you did. It's far faster, saves you a few GB on your drive, and as some people have pointed out, you're going to need it to get the Mac App Store, which for me would be more than enough to upgrade, if I wasn't the early adopter type :p

Prediction:

1. OS 10.6.5 releases LATER THIS WEEK, not tomorrow. Too quick to turn around a new beta from today to release tomorrow, give it at least 48-72 hours.

2. iTunes 10.1 releases LATER THIS WEEK.

3. AppleTV 2 receives an update LATER THIS WEEK.

3. OS 4.2 releases NEXT TUESDAY, NOV 16. This will have allowed a reasonable number of people to get the above updates over the weekend, all of which are needed for the full OS 4.2 experience.

I see almost no way OS 4.2 arrives tomorrow unless Apple is in the business of releasing a new OS X seed on Monday and then releasing the final version to the public the next day along with a new iTunes, new Apple TV update AND a major, major OS update to their premiere holiday products all at the same time.

That won't happen.

This is probably the most viable release prediction I have seen here on MR. Release 10.6.5 and let folks have several days to get it downloaded before iOS 4.2 comes out. Otherwise if they're released on the same day or consecutive days, I think people there would be some people trying to download iOS 4.2 without first getting 10.6.5 and then complaining about why it's not working.

I'd imagine error messages telling people to upgrade to 10.6.5 would popup anyway, so it wouldn't matter.

I remember times when Apple have released everything on the one day. Here's hoping a repeat of that. I've waited too long for 4.2.

Yeah that's probably correct. But spacing the releases out by several days will also allow Apple to get some feedback and hopefully make any corrections to bugs that may show up once out in the public before iOS 4.2 gets released.

What's all the excitement about with 10.6.5? I've had OS X since the beginning and 9 times out of 10 I don't notice any change with these incremental updates.

If a tiny +0.0.1 update warrants this much attention I can only imagine the chaos when OS 11 begins to surface. ;)

If i remember correctly last 10.6.4 developer beta came only a day before the public release so its quite possible that Apple releases 10.6.5 today.

10.6.5 means that iTunes 10.1 and most importantly iOS 4.2 can arrive.

I was honestly expecting this to be released 2 weeks ago... oh well, shows how well I know releases.

I wish someone would make an ios 4.2 gm jailbreak for ipad, so then I can stop waiting.

I didn't think GMs required jailbreaking to install on any iOS device? In the past I grabbed iPhone OS 2 and iPhone OS 3 when they were in the GM state without having to worry about my or my wife's phone being considered a developer phone (registered on their website and all)

He wants to jailbreak his 4.2 iPad.

What I'd like to see: OpenGL 3.x

I would really appreciate if Apple would improve on OpenGL 3.x more quickly.
10.6.4 implemented parts of OpenGL 3.x (so I heard), but since it's all about AirPlay and iOS 4.2, I don't think this will happen anytime soon.

It would require far more extensive testing in addition to NVidia updating their kext. If I look at the driver release date, it's still from 2009 ...

(Maybe it's because of my 8800 GT)

I would care about 10.6.5 specially if it has new video drivers if not I hope 10.6.6 doesn't takes too long to appear.

Games should now run faster on AMD/ATI cards. Apple changed the following frameworks in 10.6.5, to make games and other OpenGL applications faster:
- OpenCL
- Quartz
- OpenGL

Mac OS X 10.6.5 contains also improved AMD/ATI and NVIDIA drivers. These changes suggest, that they worked together with some of the most important game manufacturers.

Mac OS X 10.6.5 will not support the following:
- Some newer OpenGL extensions
- QuartzGL

And btw. it seems Apple will support third party SDXC card readers (USB 2.0 or FW800) and the exFAT file system with Mac OS X 10.6.5.
