converting external drives

This is great news! I'll be converting my external to exFAT tonight.

I too am excited about this news. Anyone know if there is a way to convert a drive without deleting everything? I have a 2 TB external, and no space to put everything temporarily...

I dont know if this is new or not but I havent noticed it before (I know you could do it via the terminal). There is an Open pages in tabs instead of windows option in the preferences for Safari.

No.

Not new.

Do you mean that a page or menu continues to scroll a little bit after you've stopped? Like, you can flick it and it keeps going a bit longer? Because Snow Leopard has done that for a while. Maybe you missed a previous update.

All I know is my MBA rev A did not have this feature until I updated yesterday. I know other newer models have had this for a while now, but I am fairly sure this is new, at least on my system. I don't think I have missed any updates..

I am not being sarcastic. (This is a first for me.)

Your best bet would be to buy another Fire Wire drive, copy all the data over, then use the second drive as a backup. Then check to make sure all the data is copied over and it is good.

Next (Triple check before you do this) erase the first drive to the new format. Then copy the data back.

Use the new drive for your backup drive.

If your data is worth keeping, it is worth backing up. Drives are getting cheep. There is no excuse for having important data that is not backed up in a minimum of one location. There is also no excuse for not testing your backups.

If you can't afford a backup drive, I understand. The economy bites the big pickle right now. Until I had a GOOD backup, I would not do anything risky with that drive like transcoding it to a different format.

I think Apple should patch Safari first before the supposed Flash holes they would have us believe...... They should repair there own products, sort there own house out before slating others.....

I have had nothing but endless problems with Flash on my new computer, I am not happy and the only way I can get it to work is to use 10.0, maybe I could totally wipe my machine in the hope it may fix it!!!... I've tried EVERYTHING else.

Try this...

I have the same computer and I also noticed the same change in scrolling in Firefox, at least, after I upgraded.

I have an early 2008 MBP and have kept up with all updates, and I just got inertial scrolling with 10.6.5. Maybe previous updates only gave it to newer models?

Safari Downloads window

Hmm... since the update, my Downloads window in Safari seems broken. When I'm downloading something, I see "1 download" at the bottom of the window while the download is in progress, but the file doesn't show up in the list (I see it in the actual Downloads folder though).

Once it's downloaded, the window is completely empty...

10.6.5 killed my 12-Core Mac Pro... Restart>Grey Screen with Apple Logo> Black Screen and that's all folks. Pushing Opt-Command-Escape brings a blue screen and then the black screen of hell.
I tried installing into a second hard drive with 10.6.4 and it killed it too!!!! I am so pissed off right now. Quality control has gone to hell!
Luckily I have 2 more drives with 10.6.4 in them and was able to restart but with old data.
I am trying a time machine copy of System and Library and hopefully it will resuscitate it.
If not, back to a clean installation from the DVD and 10.6.4
My iPhone 4's proximity sensor is still bad after 4.1, iPhoto 11 erased people's libraries, Mac Book Airs are messed up from factory and Apple just approved a swap for my 1-month-old new Mac Pro 12-Core which crashes constantly...
What is Apple doing??? This feels like the 90's all over again... Problem after problem. I just hope they never bring the Type 11 Error again!

Hrm... everything is working flawless for me.. including adding the AirPrint functionality for sharing printers that I installed after the fact... Maybe there's something on your Mac or something you did that is not compatible with the updates? Do you have any third-party hacks or odd software installed? I've never had a problem with the proximity sensor on my iPhone 4. Installing iPhoto 11 worked flawlessly for me, no loss of data. I think you are having a run of bad luck.

My Safari has been doing that for years because I asked it to. You can select your preference under the Safari General Preferences window with "Remove download list items:". Form the sounds of it, you probably want to set that to "Manually".

So what's so special about exfat? Is it super fast?

it's a cross-platform way of accessing volumes containing very large files. There's no other way to do this other than installing third party software (e.g., to write to an NTFS partition, macs need additional software. And windows can't read hfs+ partitions without third party software installed).

If I didn't have any beta builds of 10.6.5 and just did the official update is there any way to get AirPrint working on the latest GM of 4.2 for the iPad?

I installed the 3 files people have referred to (apple.convs, apple.types, and urftopdf) and rebooted and uninstalled/reinstalled the printer, but its a no go. Without having it built into the system from the betas am I SOL?

You probably installed them in the wrong place. Just use this app. Uninstall your printer, restart, and the add it again.

Actually that's exactly right

I found a guide and did it in terminal and got it up and running.

Now I am just left wondering why my Numbers and Pages doesn't print ... that was the whole point :(

Flash Player problem

After update Adobe Flash Player can't find my USB class cam ? on Adobe Flash Player setting pop down menu . Bulit-in iSight yes but it's the same cam. But iMac and most computer need USA Class to work on Flash Player.

iMac24, iPhone4

exFAT seems to solve my worries!

I am going to get my first Mac (MBA) and I have an external hdd which I'd like to use with a PC occasionally. I have been reading a lot about splitting the drive into two partitions (HFS+ & NTFS) and users have reported problems.

Now this exFAT support is like the best solution and it makes my purchase decision much easier. :D

Looking forward to more reviews from you guys about exFAT's performance!

I'm able to fix it by installing 10.2 beta, but then it breaks the next day. Something's screwy.

It actually came from the Magic Trackpad and Multi-Touch Update.
I thought it was sent out to all multitouch trackpads including Macbook Air Rev A. Perhaps for some reason it didn't turn it on in your preferences then automatically and 10.6.5 turned it on.
