Looks like Apple is no longer offering security updates for this OS. Shame on you, Tim Apple!
Are you sure that the older OS needs security updates. The surface area for vulnerabilities was very much smaller and, I think, probably written by better software engineers than we have now.

All I want it know is, why Cheetah? Literally the worst version of Mac OS X. I think even the Public Beta was better.

Getting Leopard to run would have probably been just as easy (ok, hard), and the only real reason it didn't support G3 Macs was speed.
Leopard wouldn't have run: Leopard requires a G4, Wiis only have a G3.
Why Cheetah? Probably because he saw it as a good starting point.

This is such a cool little project with some really interesting technical info on how it was achieved, and good grief I remember when something like this would have been received by the MacRumors community as a super cool nerdy achievement; it's depressing to see how the comments here are full of sad sacks asking inane questions like "why" and suggesting the guy go outside and touch grass etc. If you read his blog post (guessing the majority of negative commenters didn't bother) he explains why - essentially it was an excellent learning experience and allowed him to develop and practice new skills. Especially considering the PPC G3 underpinnings of the Wii's Broadway SoC, it was a super interesting exercise in getting Mac OS running on hardware that in some ways is supported, but in other ways seriously isn't. These are the sort of people who end up making the systems that run the devices you use every day guys. No need to have sour grapes because you can't understand it.

Exactly this. The guy’s followed his intellectual curiosity, learned a swathe of new skills and proven his hunch correct. Next projects might be something of the next level.

Equally, some kid reads this and thinks ‘Cool, hey what if….?’ and starts working on something else. Or is inspired to go off and learn how to write code. None of this is a waste of time, surely?

If you want to game on your Wii installing Mac OS isn't the way to go. If you want to play Age of Empires II and the re-release doesn't do it for you, you could probably still get the original working on any version of Windows or Wine, Crossover Games, etc.
Hahahah wow you really think the only way in the universe I could play games was with a Wii running MacOS? Your advice is worthless and unnecessary. Its like giving Internet advice to the guy who got Mac OS X running on a Wii, “You know if you wanted to run Mac OS X, running it on a Wii isn’t the way to go!”

If your post was serious thats just sad. 🤡Hahaha
