Why would they expect it cheaper? If they made "up to date" cover 3 months, the people who bought a computer 3 months and 1 day ago would be mad. You can't please everyone. The fact is that Apple did not promise these people that they would get Leopard cheap, and if they asked on here, anyone would have told them that Apple's policy towards up to date was that it was only usually covering a few weeks before they announced a new OS. You should give Apple some credit for being fairly flexible with their start dates, as people obviously are getting the up-to-date disk who ordered their computers before October 1st.

What makes me laugh is the amazing attitude that people have when seeming to "expect" that they will get a free upgrade when there is no evidence to that effect.

If you can't afford $129 for Leopard, don't pay it. Tiger is still a great OS.

what apple is really doing is this: "You still baught a computer within the month in which we said our new OS was coming out? For being so dumb why don't we make you feel better by allowing you to upgrade: all you have to do is pay around $6.00 to correct your stupidity"

Bummer...

The minimum requirements really put a dent in my plans here, as my girlfriend has an 800MHz iBook at 10.3.9, and I have a MacBook Pro at 10.4.10. I was hoping to buy the 10.5 family pack and upgrade us both, but it looks like that is not going to happen. A mixed family pack would be nice, with five licenses that could be used for either Tiger or Leopard. :(

I dont get why schools have different prices, some have 69 and some are at 89. Mine is at 89 and it is a public school, a UC in California.

i would happily pay 20 dollars less for the same thing.

Maybe the 4th time will be the charm for buying Leopard.

Originally I was planning on buying Leopard for the educational price while I'm in downtown Chicago, until I learned that educational pricing on software is only available online.

So:

First I ordered for $116 (edu price) + tax from Apple.com

A few hours later I saw that Mac Mall had it for $109 with free shipping so I canceled the Apple order and ordered from Mac Mall.

Later on I saw that the institutional price with $69.00 will learning that Mac Mall is not known for helpful customer service, so I canceled the order.

I called my schools computer store where they were convinced that Leopard was going to be at the educational, not institutional, price (they are giving away free iLife though, go figure).

This morning, I saw Amazon was also offering Leopard for $109 with no rebates (unlike Mac Mall) so I ordered from them.

This afternoon however a bulletin was placed on the campus website stating that Leopard would only be $69.00, so I canceled the Amazon order.

Hopefully I will now actually get Leopard.

Lol. Patience is a virtue. I'm waiting it out to see how it goes but it looks like Leopard for me. My campus score doesn't carry Mac OSes.

alright, alright, alright.... 129, 116, 109, 89, 69...
whatever the price, i go to an ivy league school. despite this, the school's website says 69 for tiger without a single mention of leopard. in fact, they still list iWork and iLife 06 for 39... so the website doesn't get updated much. fine... i'll take it... i'm gonna assume that means leopard will be 69 or 89 or "institutionally" discounted... BUT, can i assume it'll be in our store on Oct. 26? does apple hit up everyone with new software at once, or will i be subject to my school's store placing an order?
if updating their website is any indication of how speed moves around there, i don't wanna get my hopes up of the $69 price if they actually have to request it.

in simple terms: how likely is it that an institution will have it in stock on the 26th???

Why don't you email them, call, or stop by and ask?

$158 is cheap for Leopard-previously OS X cost $229 here in Australia.

Pre-ordered mine two hours ago from the Apple Store with free shipping-and Apple says:
"Ships by: DELIVERS ON OCTOBER 26TH"

I'm confused. How can any of these systems qualify if you input your serial number and purchase date before October 1st?

The system rejects an earlier purchase date regardless of serial, right?

Bought in September still get $9.95

That is not a Microsoft edu discount, that is a special deal that your college pays for ... part of the technology fee you pay every year, which pays for more than two copies of Windows. =)

If you bought your Mac in September looks like you can get the $9.95 upgrade, I did and others. Don't think they are quibbling over a few days. Those who had a good 2 years on 10.4 (ed copy) paid about 8 cents a day. Those who bought their Mac 5 days too early would pay about $24 a day!!! So I think they unofficially realize this so it is likely that if you bought in August or September you can get 10.5 for 9.95...most have. They've left room for slack like rounding to the next highest grade.

can you tell me if I buy MBP on 27 oct is it going
to come with already install Leopard or with installer disc?

So, just for hypothetical purposes, would it be wise to buy a new macbook with Tiger, get the Leopard Upgrade for 10 bucks, and instead use the leopard upgrade DVD to update an old imac instead of the macbook? In other words, would the Leopard upgrade DVD work on the imac if one didn't install it on the macbook? :)

Yes. It's the Full Retail version... ;)

up to date

for those that are reporting having the up to date program working for serial numbers that were purchased before October first, like August 31st, are you entering your serial number and the date of purchase as being October first?? WHoever actually got this to work, can you provide any additional details??

thanks,
matt

It worked for previous OS X releases too, those who bought macs from resellers as apple sold macs to resellers not the customer. Apple does not get customer receipts from reseller or name of buyer. Also apple flags certain mac serial numbers to work as close to announcement date, they don't want to spill the beans for everyone. It's like the government that won't tell you all the tax breaks, grants, etc. you have to look for it.

that's odd...I'm at UCSD, and the price is 69.99 here. I just cancelled my amazon order this morning and ordered one from the UCSD bookstore :)

When will the computer with pre-installed Leopard be available? Now?? October 26th?? December 30th??

I chatted with someone on the Apple store yesterday, and she said that Macs would be shipping with leopard on the 26th. Not before. If you buy it on the 25th, you've got to pay $10 to upgrade.

yea i dont know..i go to UCI and the website has Tiger for 69 and Leopard for 89.

can i go to UCSD and get it?

My sister goes to UCLA, so i can ask her to get it for me if its 69 as well.

Hanky Panky at Apple Store

Education institution pricing is still $69, including for Leopard. Institutional pricing is what departmental components of universities pay for the product.

Universities can still choose to resell Leopard in their own stores for $69, since that is the institutional price. For example, Leopard will still be sold to indivuduals, including faculty, staff, and students, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for $69.

At about noon central time I visited apple's educational store where the Leopard was priced at $ 69.00. I saved it for later purchase. When I checked it on another computer at about 2:45 pm the price had jumped to $ 116.00 and my saved cart was blank. Just what is apple doing?:eek:

I called apple and a Stan pickup the phone. He denied there was a price drop on the website. I had Three other people view the same page before. Asked about why my saved cart items were missing and he pleded ignorance but offered 15.00 OFF on purchases $ 100.00 or more.

Most UC bookstores will ask you for your student/staff ID before you can purchase it. Otherwise, they cannot sell you the item.

EDIT: sorry upon further search this HAS been covered many times already...sorry, next time i'll search more extensively before I post!!

I see some people have been posting back and forth about the upgrade issues, but I thought I would share my story...

I bought a new Macbook on September 30th and recently read about the upgrade option if purchased on or after October 1st. At first I was very discouraged, but thought I would look into it since my macbook didn't arrive until October 3rd. I tried calling Apple's help-line, and after getting nothing but recorded menus and irrelevant options, I just thought I would look online.

On apple.com on the right side there is a OS Tiger Upgrade window. I went to the eligibility page and entered the date purchased, serial, etc. At first it wouldn't let me move on because of the September 30th date, so I entered October 1st instead.

I don't know if they allowed it intentionally or accidentally but it let me complete my order for Leopard and only cost the $9.95 shipping fee...great success!

I'm sorry if this has been covered 100 times already, but I hope at least for a few people I was helpful!

The system uses a formula to determine the probability that the system was sold in the timeframe. This is why setting it to October 1st and inputting your serial number worked. It is impossible to verify each computer sold, unless sold at an Apple Store. If it accepted your serial number, you are good to go.

hm. I'll just have to find a friend that goes to UCSD to pick a copy up for me when i want to then if UCLA is over 69.
