I'm just glad Apple isn't building browser only machines like google. Those things are basically the same price as PC laptops. Why would you pay the same for less? Plus SSDs boot up so fast, I don't need a trimmed down machine.

New macbook air and lion life is good. I do like this feature great for the kids without having to open up Guest. Apple your just to good to me. :)

Very impressive, I've actually seen this implementation with PC motherboards, its been around for a long while, but its good to see Apple has done the same, sometimes all you need to do is use the internet for a quick few minutes..

It is not on the login screen, but the lock screen.

Set a password, wait for your computer to lock and the option will be on the screen where it asks for your password.

So its more for allowing you to quickly look something up without having to log in every time. Makes sense.

Some pc do this but not very well done. Have not seen it take off on the PC side. Would like to see this even more.

Some pc did do this but not very well done. Have not seen it take off on the PC side. Would like to see this even more.

Yeah it hasn't really taken off, but the ability to browse the web without booting into a operating system has been around for quite a while.. I do like Apple's implementation better though, looks a lot nicer..

The "restart to browser" feature was clearly mentioned in the keynote as a security feature, so the Mac can log on to the Internet and send its location. This is not a new discovery.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

Finally, Wife Mode! Now when she wants to use my computer for a minute to surf, she won't accidentally mess up any of my important (porn) files.

So that would be imPORNtant files, then? :)

Why are people booting up machines anyway? On mac or pc. Done working? Close laptop. Want to work? Open laptop. Even a crappy machine is ready to work in a matter of seconds. Just make sure you have a password set when waking from sleep.

Hahhaha - love it! So you, too, have experienced that "Ohhh shoot!" moment when the wife says "Honey... Can I just use your laptop for a minute..." :D

RTP.

I let the wife and kids take my old iphone 1st gen on a trip with them. Loaded up with diego and dora vids. It's basically an itouch now. I hadn't messed with it in a year or so. Charged it up and sent them on their way. A few days later the wife calls... "what the heck have you been looking at on this thing?" Doh!

You're such a fanboy. I've used Asus boards in the past and I must say those features are quite good. Don't troll like this without knowing anything about it. Apple is not the only computer manufacturer in the world.

There are duplicate features everywhere - various implementations. It's the ones from Apple that matter in this case.

Don't really care if Asus did something like this or if they already had it. If all I wanted was straight features implemented in any old upside down fashion I'd be using Windows XP on a netbook. Seems this feature hasn't taken off on PCs. Big surprise.

Now back to Apple news.

Ooooooo! This is going to be a great way to piss of my sister-in-law!

Of course this is the same S-I-L that took it upon herself to upgrade my wife's old Windows XP computer to SP3 which removed the address bar in the taskbar. The same address bar my wife used daily and the sole reason I had not updated her computer to SP3.

And piss of my M-I-L, the same one who used to clear games stats on games my wife was playing.

This is gonna be GREAT!

I'm currently running SL and have files and programs locally, if I decide to upgrade to Lion. 1, can I choose to keep all my files and just "upgrade" the OS or do I need to restore everything from Time Machine? 2, can I choose to wipe all the data and start from a clean slate? What are the options? :)

This is cool. But with with Resume, if you restart out of this how to you get back to your normal user account?

Is this a hold down the Option key type feature?

kinda pointless..

why not just log in????

also, if your gonna let people use your laptop.... just make them their own account...

I wonder how long it'll take for someone to security breach that mode in such a way they gain access to your stuff.

My guess is.. NOT LONG.

This is cool but I dunno if I'd ever use it.

P.S. I hope Apple keeps things consistent between Lion and iOS 5. For example, Apple needs to update Lion to use round on/off switches now like iOS 5 instead of the square ones like in Time Machine preferences etc.

This is a part of 'Find my Mac'. This is not to compete with ChromeOS/Chromebooks.

In order to use this you need to install iCloud and enable 'Find my Mac' (this allows you to locate and wipe your Mac should it be stolen). The guest account is then repurposed and will only reboot to the recorvery partition (which is also new in Lion) and only allow guests to open up Safari and connect to WLAN networks. As soon as they quit Safari the computer shuts down.

If you have secured your Mac with a password, logging into the guest account is the only thing thieves can do. iCloud cleverly uses this to goad thieves into going online and broadcasting their position as well as allowing for remote wipes – it even displays instructions for how to connect to WLAN networks when it boots up – while still not allowing them to access any of your files.

This is not supposed to compete with Chrome OS. It doesn't have a password manager and you can't download anything. It also won't remember anything after a reboot.

By the way, you can now also start up Safari when booting into the recovery partition normally. That's also new and it's just useful but nothing else.

Wonder if data that is generated when surfing with Safari will be saved in RAM only and then discarded once the machine restarts. But actually... for those of you who like to be safe, this is nothing but Porn Mode 2.0! :)
