Thank you so much, MacMan 66, for the very helpful answer. I definitely don't need the server.
It's great for a technoboob like me to know that there are folks like you who offer clear information at a level that I can understand.
Again, my thanks...
Could some patient and understanding person tell me what a server would actually do on on my MBP (2011 model)
What could I do with it in practical terms.
I have the feeling that if I am so dumb I have to ask this question, I probably am too dumb to utilize whatever the server would do - but I'll ask anyway as I will be getting Lion when it comes out.
Thanks in advance...
It seemed too good to be true, but I'm hopeful for a reasonable price.
Maybe wait until they actually make the announcement before calling the lawyers.
Most of the things OS X Server can do a regular version of OS X can do. However, on normal OS X most of the functionality is only available through a command line and you don't get pretty UIs

Hope that will remain; keep the components in OS X and pay another $99 for the nice UI would be fine for me

Does anyone know if Lion Server might allow me to share iTunes, iPhoto & iMovie libraries across Macs? How about across user accounts? I previously tried to share these between user accounts on a single iMac under Snow Leopard (single-user) and did not get good results. If I remember correctly, sharing of iMovie library was not supported. I was able to share the iPhoto library, but it was quickly corrupted and had to be rebuilt. I lost a few days worth of work I had spent tagging the faces in my photo collection. Also, would I have to run the server version on both my iMacs or not required on the client? Thanks for any help guys!!![]()
It's a $49.99 download

You have to be running Snow leopard $erver (The $499 version to get the deal or have the Mac Mini or other Mac preinstalled)
thats not how I understand it. for 49.99 dollars you get the 10.7 and the server apps. considering 10.7 client is only 29.99
You’ll need Snow Leopard Server v10.6.6 or later to purchase Lion and Lion Server from the Mac App Store.
What I think they mean by that site, is that they are *only* talking about OSX Server updating to Lion Server. Ie. you need 10.6.6 because it has the updated Mac App Store required, but the talk over server only is because you are on a page that is about the server version.I watched the keynote again and Phil said it was an addon for the client version of Lion. Lots of conflicting info from Apple.
