Terrific Help

Thank you so much, MacMan 66, for the very helpful answer. I definitely don't need the server.

It's great for a technoboob like me to know that there are folks like you who offer clear information at a level that I can understand.

Again, my thanks...

No worries, anytime :)

Just because it is a separate download doesn't mean it will be an additional price. I'd imagine XCode will be a separate download too to save on bandwidth usage for people that have no need for those features. If Lion is also available on DVD, I'd think the Server add-ons would be under optional installers like XCode is.

I hope they don't overcharge for the Server capability-- I've been really excited about it. One interpretation of this is that it will be included in any physical media release (DVDs, for example), but separate downloads through the App Store since screenshot here seems to be pretty specific about the App Store.

I've been dreaming about what I was going to do with my Lion Server at home now ever since I first heard it was going to be affordable...

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8G4 Safari/6533.18.5)

I just hope I can directly upgrade from Snow Leopard Server to Lion Server without having to do a clean install.

Could some patient and understanding person tell me what a server would actually do on on my MBP (2011 model)

What could I do with it in practical terms.

I have the feeling that if I am so dumb I have to ask this question, I probably am too dumb to utilize whatever the server would do - but I'll ask anyway as I will be getting Lion when it comes out.

Thanks in advance...

Most of the things OS X Server can do a regular version of OS X can do. However, on normal OS X most of the functionality is only available through a command line and you don't get pretty UIs

I wonder if the version of Server that is free download is the pretty interface from server but only works at the start with the things that are already in the system.

Like you can install server interface on any mac now and use it to monitor to a server configured Mac.

I know there has been suggestions they should do a server store. If they do additional function could be purchased on the store in the form of vm images to run on generic server cluster but still use Mac OS X server to monitor and configure.

Hope that will remain; keep the components in OS X and pay another $99 for the nice UI would be fine for me

42streetsdown is a little off with their statement. OS X has a built in Apache web server but there's a lot more to OS X Server than just that. iChat, Address Book and iCal Server is not available in standard OS X even through the command line. You would need to source and set up your own CardDAV and CalDAV servers. File and basic web sharing is all you get in OS X. OS X Server is a lot more than a nice UI

Server Support of iPhoto, iMovie & iTunes File Sharing?

Does anyone know if Lion Server might allow me to share iTunes, iPhoto & iMovie libraries across Macs? How about across user accounts? I previously tried to share these between user accounts on a single iMac under Snow Leopard (single-user) and did not get good results. If I remember correctly, sharing of iMovie library was not supported. I was able to share the iPhoto library, but it was quickly corrupted and had to be rebuilt. I lost a few days worth of work I had spent tagging the faces in my photo collection. Also, would I have to run the server version on both my iMacs or not required on the client? Thanks for any help guys!! :apple:

I'm still not clear if this is providing additional features to the OS, or is it actually Apple taking out things that were standard with the non-server version: apache, ssl, screen sharing, etc?

This is starting to sound like a Lion Home vs. Lion Home Premium type of thing, I sure hope AAPL isn't going in that direction.

This is what I am hoping for. Setup a Mac Mini to be my server and have all my iTunes, iPhoto everything synced and updated automatically while using the server software to do it. That would be nice if this is the case.

I wonder whose bright idea it was to show the server apps on a 27" iMac so it's unreadable

I watched the keynote again and Phil said it was an addon for the client version of Lion. Lots of conflicting info from Apple.
What I think they mean by that site, is that they are *only* talking about OSX Server updating to Lion Server. Ie. you need 10.6.6 because it has the updated Mac App Store required, but the talk over server only is because you are on a page that is about the server version.

Yeah and correct me if I'm wrong, on the lion server page it shows it on a MBP but you can't put SL Server on a laptop and it says you can't upgrade to Lion Server without already having SL Server so wtf?

You mean the apple page is specifically talking about upgrading from server to server not SL to server? Let's hope so ...
