Mac OS X Panther to be "unlike anything else out there" says looprumors

I know life isn't free, but I quote iJon Here:

Fresh or not, we know 10.1 was supposed to be free, and then they turned around and wanted to charge us $20, though those lucky enough to be near an Apple authorized dealer were still able to get 10.1 free. The $20 10.1 update though had a bonus 9.2.1 full install disk and Developer Tools which the free 10.1 update didn't have. I am still saying that 10.3 had nothing to do with the announcement that 10.1 was free unless someone can give me incontrovertible proof that 10.3 is free or $20, I am sticking to my guns and saying it is $129. Regardless of what you guys say. I'd rather err on the side of caution than the side of ignorance.
Right, but what I'm saying is this, people come to this site and read the rumors saying something "will" happen, vs. something "might" happen, and when it does not happen get mightily disappointed. At least if you are willing to admit Apple might charge full price, I'll be satisfied. We get enough FUD spreaders on Maccentral boards and elsewhere who quote the rumor sites thinking there is some authority here. There is none. At least let's admit that. Apple never promised that 10.3 would be free or $20. If they did, I'd like to see where they did it.
Ah but we are face to face, I could ask the moderator for your IP. And furthermore, I know some people who would lose their life's savings to $129. They could be reading this very thread.

If I knew of software that didn't modify my HTML code without my asking it to, I'd use something else. BTW I did just purchase an upgrade to Adobe GoLive 4.0 of version 6.0. I'm testing it over the next several weeks. Though it seems again it wants to force ISO-8859 on me.

I've been using it since version 4 and I'm currently using version 6. It's quite nice. If I remember correctly, you can adjust the character set in the preferences. It's just that the ASCII character set is okay for most Americans.
Of course, there are quick-and-dirty automation pieces which are great for creative types and somewhat bloated. You can create your own automation and add it to GoLive, however.

Dude, people need to stop crying about paying for software. Apple gets paid for software, they make money, stock goes up, Apple lives to fight another day. That's the point. It's a business for god's sake, that's the point. You want to use something free, go download YDL. But don't complain to us when you can't get any software for it. You bought the BMW of computers.
When you buy a BMW, you pay for premium gas. That's it. No crying about it, it's the price you pay for luxury. If you didn't want to pay for premium, you could buy a Ford.
What really ticks me off is that everyone will complain about how much Macs cost and the same people will complain when they have to pay for updates. Well guess what people, Mac prices are dropping. They're probably going to have to make money somewhere else. Where's it going to come from? SOFTWARE!!!
If you don't like it, pay for windows and have a nice crash filled, worm infested, privacy invaded day.

Navy I agree with you, though you spell worm with an 'r'. And I don't know where iJon comes up with his idea that 10.3 is going to be free or $20, other than extrapolation from what happened with 10.1. But past events are no guarantee of future returns as the stock broker usually tells you.

i expect the next OS to be about 129 bucks, give or take this and that. OSX has cost at every major increase and will most likely continue this. It takes a lot of programmers a lot of time to do all this stuff and we have to pay for it somehow. maybe it will be big but i see a newer polished jag that will be able to run 64 bit OS and applications designed for it.

I also remember Phil Schiller talking about the pay schedule. It was last summer because of the flap around Jaguar costing $129. He said they were trying to stick to the schedule of paid upgrades about every 18 months, and a free ($20) upgrade in between.
I can't find the video, which isn't surprising. Who the hell would keep a quicktime video of Phil Schiller (or anyone for that matter) talking about Jaguar?
Anyway, I guess we'll find out in a couple of months.

OK, stop bitchin about the prices here. we got 10.0.x-10.1.x for free. I picked up the 10.1 update at CompUSA, no charge. Some paid $20 for shipping, but that won't break you, will it?
10.2 was a major update, and included many new features. Besides every update from 10.0.0 up to then was free. Apple has to charge something for Mac OS X or else they won't make any money.
From what Apple has said (and gopher, they did say this, and we're not just making this up) 10.3 will be free. Of course, this wasn't an official press release, so they could change that any time.
Besides, it's the best OS availble, and for only $129, it beats the pants out of a $200 copy of windoze that doesn't do half as much...

10.3 WILL be a paid update/upgrade. The ONLY reason 10.1 was free was because 10.0 sucked pretty bad. It wasn't the start of a trend...I'm pretty sure will will be charged for all major updates from now on. I don't have any insider info but it just makes sense.

ok. ijon doesn't have a reason to lie. And even if apple changed their mind at the last minute it would not matter. I don't want apple to charge for the upgrade and i hope ijon is right but that doens't mean hes liable in apples ultimate decision to charge for a point relelase. I think your making a miscorrelation and honestly i would relax a little.
Hey my only qualm is that he isn't willing to back up his assertion when he is so positive about it being true. His claim that this is true because of something that happened in the past is intriguing, but then to not go and show us his evidence, is to make the validity of his statement in question. If he isn't willing to back up his assertion, that either makes him out to be a person who is mistaken, or on purposely deceiving me. If there was some solid evidence that 10.3 was said to be free or close to free, I'd let go of it. Otherwise I stand by my assertion there is no reason to believe it will be less than $129.

I think that it's foolish for anyone to try to predict Apple's business model in the first place. God knows they're famous for doing the "wrong thing". 😉
I'm leaning more towards the 18 month pay cycle argument, but that's just me.
