The X in OS X is not pronounced "ten;" it is the letter X, not a Roman numeral. The name Mac OS X is pronounced Mac OS "X" (just like Racer X from Speed Racer, not Racer Ten), with a version number afterward, such as Mac OS X 10.3.8. As has been mentioned many times before, the X is an association to Unix and NeXTSTEP. OS X is a name, just like Unix, NeXTSTEP, Linux, and well, Windows. And just as there theoretically can be Unix 10, Unix 11, Unix 12, NeXTSTEP 10, NeXTSTEP 11, NeXTSTEP 12, and Windows whatever, then there can be Mac OS X 10, Mac OS X 11, Mac OS X 12, etc.

X will be the name of the Mac OS for as long as it is based on Unix/NeXTSTEP. Steve Jobs loves the name OS X and the association with NeXT. Maybe Racer X is his favorite Speed Racer character.

Never heard Steve say "Mac OS Ten" on stage then? Or the Panther 'introduction' video where Omar (sp?) calls it "Ten" too?

How about Saber Tooth for the next big OS from Apple. I'll make a small prediction, I bet they do have another major update within 2 years of release of Tiger. Apples is in this to make money, if they do not release a big update they cannot make money. There is also a fifty fifty chance that the next big Apple OS update after Tiger, will come out before Longhorn, so far Longhorn looks like someone is blowing smoke and nothing more.

I think Apple will be simultaneously developing OSX 10.5 (perhaps codenamed Sabertooth), and OSXI. I think we'll see 10.5 in 2007 and OSXI in 2009.

And if they wanted to be a little punny, they could advertise OSXI with the phrase "Oh, sexy!" (which is what OSXI might potentially sound like if you tried to pronounce it)

lynx, not sabertooth. please, is a sabertooth a living big cat?

I've actually heard the name Ocelot being thrown around. And also, Lynx, Cougar, and Leopard are all registered trademarks by Apple.

I think that OS 11 or whatever name it will have will come after 10.5 becsaue, OS 9 came after 8.5 ;)

Other "editions" of Mac OS's have gone higher than .5, They change the Major number when they introduce a Major improvement, development is not influenced by the numbers, the numbers are influenced by the development.

We also had 8.6....

Ohh sorry about that then, just thought I saw Steve introduce OS 9 after OS 8.5 "it is a great improvent to 8.5" but I was wrong then eh

Edit: did OS 8.6 come after OS 9 to accomodate 8.5  maby that why

Nope...Mac OS 8.5, Mac OS 8.6, Mac OS 9.0 was the order.

BTW, I never used Mac OS 8.5 or 8.6. I went straight from 8.1 to 9.0.

Thanks for that, now I know

i think that by the time the next big change comes apple will do away with tiger/panther/jag naming and go in another direction like planets or moons :

Pluto
Mars
Titan
all with there upated .1/.2/.3/as well

What are peoples latest estimates for release of longhorn, and do you think it will be designed to compete with tiger, or a later version of Mac OS?

...also I haven't posted for a while, but whats with all the pirate names?

Well, if you consider the track that the Mac OS has been on lately, we can start looking for Mac OS X 10.5 sometime around late summer into the fall of 2006 (figuring something like 1.25-1.5 years between releases). As, given the last thing that I heard, Longhorn isn't due to come out until mid-2006, if we consider the track record of Microsoft at getting their OSes out on anything that remotely resembles on-time, I expect that if Longhorn is expecting to go against Tiger, it'll be going against the previous version of Mac OS X. (Who remembers when Windows XP - formerly referred to as Windows NT 5 - was originally due to come out? Anyone? Anyone? Beuller? How about early 1998?) Not exactly a stellar track record... And when was Longhorn originally planned to be released? Hmm?

I remember hearing plans for Longhorn to be released as early as 2001, when Windows XP came out. This was back when the reports of Windows XP scheduled for a 1998 release were circulating. After Windows XP, Longhorn's debut was moved to 2003, then 2004, then 2005. Now it's scheduled for 2006.

I think Lynx would be an awesome name, unfortunately they can't use it. Lynxes are wussy little cats and it would look pathetic after Jaguar, Panther, and Tiger.

I think OS 11 will be the first full 64-bit OS, as that is a major improvement... For those of us who have top of the range PowerMacs :p

Just for fun...What do you guys think will be accomplished in the next MAJOR release of Apples new OS? (Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X for example) Also, what do you think their new naming trend is goign to be since big cat name are running out.

Oh come on; wait a couple years to talk about this one.

But in a couple years all machines will be 64 bit so they will need to make 10.4 64 bit or at least 10.5.

Don't forget that it was also moved to late 2007/early 2008 before they decided to take WinFS and a few other things out so they could (plan to) release it in 2006.

what id really like to see in macs is multiple desktops, like in kde and gnome (unless the already exist, sry im a mas switcher wannabe)

next code name for os 10.x could be

lynx
