Mac OSX/Win7 file copy very slow

i've had this same problem on Linux and hours of google search turn up random tweaks that don't work.

Is the only real solution NFS or FTP?

I'm getting 3.2MB (big B) per/s max on a 54G wireless home network copying large multi GB Files
