Question, how do you know what codecs are inside the containers? And how do you define which codecs to use when converting movies? If I use Handbrake to convert something I can choose the codecs, however if I use Toast it just gives me the option of what I want to play it on. Is there a way to look at a file after its been converted to determine what the codecs are?

Open the .mp4 in QuickTime. Press Apple+I, or go to Window -> Inspector.

This will give you some information about the file.

Quicktime Pro though will convert anything it can play - which is limitless thanks to the ability to add Quicktime components like Perian to it.

While I haven't used it for this purpose, Handbrake is free and has recently added the ability to convert movie files so that might be worth a try.

Don't bother with QuickTime Pro just for converting movies. You can do the exact same thing for free with QTAmateur. If you want to really tweak settings (and possibly convert the movies faster), then Handbrake is the way to go.

Having troubles with mp4 files

I tried to pull an mp4 file over from a Win machine via a thumb drive and couldn't get the thing to open. Even tried changing the suffix -- nothing. Finally, I tried an idea I got from this forum -- opened ITunes and then opened from within ITunes and it opened right up.

I am trying to play mpeg4 movie from a dvd+r and i keep getting the message "An invalid sample description was found in the movie". Can anyone help?

.mp4 files work great on macs, in quicktime as well as itunes.

Good luck and welcome aboard. :)

I have tried to open an MP4 file on Quicktime player from iMovie but it does not seem to work and i do not know how to convert it from an MP4 to an AVI.
If someone can help me i would really appreciate it.

1. "VLC".
2. "QTAmateur"

Both free.

What version if iMovie are you using? If it's the latest, the "Sharing" process can take a long time. You may be trying to access the file before iMovie is done processing.
