This is incorrect. There is not enough space to write why but in a short and sweet version of why:

Mac does not have the folders the virus will be searching out, macs do not have a registry like windows.

There is MUCH more to it but thats the short version. A virus is not going to affect your hardware either.

I believe the poster meant that a virus on the bootcamp partition would affect his Mac partition about as much as a virus on a completely different machine would (that is, not at all).

I'm with everyone here - your mac is a far, far more capable windows machine than a netbook is. I had a netbook for a while as my secondary machine to travel to/from school with, and I recently sold it and have picked up an Aluminum MacBook, which I have running OS X and windows.

Because when you spend $3000 at the apple store for a mbp and the whole shabang, you want to be assured that no MS problems with viruses and such will show up on your mac.
You sound like you think a virus will destroy your computer making you buy another one. Thats impossible. Viruses cant hurt your hardware, the worst that can happen is you will have to reinstall the operating system.

That's exactly what he said. He said that a virus on his Windows VM partition will affect OSX as much as a virus on a separate netbook would. ie, they will both cause zero harm...

After reading through the thread, I think that the simple solution would be to get VMware Fusion or Parallels, create a virtual image, install Windows XP and MSOffice Professional 2007 (probably best) or 2003.

That way you have 100% compatibility and have applications like Access, Publisher, etc.

As for the Malware issue, here is what I do. I set up my Virtual Machine. Once done, then I duplicate the file. Then if my primary VM is hosed, I simply exit the VM and then delete it. Duplicate the backup VM. Rename it as the default. And launch the clean image.

Note, I save my files on the Mac side via folder sharing so I don't need to worry about loosing any files.

Of course in the interim, Microsoft Office for the Mac may be enough for your needs. Some students use iWork and that is sufficient for their needs.

But at least you know of a safe and easy solution should you need full Microsoft Office PC compatibility.

OP, you should also hire a mercenary to protect your precious 3000$ MacBook Pro, because, you know, terrorists and the Swine Flu are amongst the greatest causes of fatality in 3000$ MBP's.

It's expensive but it's a worthy investment. With a pack of rubbers, your 3000$ MacBook Pro will be protected.

Um I gues you could look at it that way...

I would also recommend you clean your laptop with a mixture of javelisant and Purell (any kind of antibacterial agent would suffice, but Purell is better) often. You are never too safe from viruses on your expensive 3000$ MacBook Pro, coming either from the network or from the outside world.

Dollar signs go in front of the value...thanks for the serious posts

...And I wouldn't have brought up this whole thing about viruses causing mayhem had the apple employee who helped me not practically passed out in horror when I said I was considering running Windows on my mbp.

For great cultural benefit of yourself [/borat], in French Canada the dollar sign goes after the digits.

But anyway... you couldn't possibly be talking about... REAL american dollars?

/me bows in front of you and your $3000 USD expensive MacBook Pro.
