Mac Pro 1.1 only starts in "safe mode"

I would appreciate help.

I got an old not working mac pro 1.1 (xeon 2.66) in 2007.

Config:
NVIDIA 7300 GT
2G RAM
320GB disk

Here's the symptom:
start with the logo loading and after a black screen (in early tests the screen was white ...) with the mouse pointer in the top left. normally there should the login window.
Strange thing is that it starts properly in "safe mode".

The person who gave it to me told me that originally there was a problem with fan disconnected and so he assumes overheating.
When I've had this computer, the fan CPU was not working. So I handed the connections correctly. And now fan works.

I removed the RAM, graphics card, disk, plug everything and I had the surprise to see it working normaly. it reboots 2 times and after that the problem appear again (without touching anything more).

I reseted the PRAM
did a hardware check (with the original CD) and all is OK

When I try to reinstall Mac OS:
Original Mac OS: start correctly on the CD and then the beautiful screen "kernel panic" of mac. nothing more, not the first window of the install.
Mac OS Snow Leopard: start correctly on the CD and then nothing, blank screen.

In safe mode, I did some test with Me is TechTool and surprise, when I test the video memory I released a huge number (like 130 tera B). Is it normal when we are in safe mode ?

When I start in normal mode, when I'm stuck on the screen black (or white before) with the pointer, the system is still functional (except the graphics)
So I can connect to remote SSH over the network and get control of the machine.

I do not think processors are dead because it starts in safe mode and I can see 4 cores.
I also think that even in case of overheating of processors, the motherboard is smart enough to stop everything before to burn the logic board or processors. Which is not the case of the graphics card nvidia 7300 GT which has burning without even noticing. There are also brown color near the graphics card on the metal of the memory location due of the graphics card.

I orient myself quite heavily on a graphics card problem but I wonder if you think about something else or if I forgot to do something.

Hello,

It could be a GPU problem, but just to be sure: can you do a fresh OS X install on the machine? Can you verify that it's not software/plug-ins/apps/etc... related? Safeboot will, among other things, prevent some apps from loading. Before dumping your GPU, you could check for this type of problem.

The problem is that I can't install MAC OSX because of a kernel panic after the grey MAC loading screen.
 
Borrow a video card from some friend/relative/work colleage (or buy one used) and re-test.
 
I don't know anyone with mac pro.
Everyone I know have macbook or imac ... and in my company we only work on windows.
I'm looking for a good price for a new card but it's very expensive.
 
It's a Mac pro 1.1 and not 5.1.
I don't know what the guy did before to give it to me.

Well if it thinks it's 5,1 maybe you need 10.6.4 or higher disc?;)
Terribly frustrating.
 
I think that the guy installed snow leopard on an other mac and plug the hard drive in my mac.

Gotcha. It should still boot up and work just fine as I just did this the other day with a 3,1 and a 5,1. Most likely the GPU as stated earlier. AND...I just read the part about 'brown color'. Yup. Get a 5770.

You said in your first post that it boots up properly in Safe mode. Can't you boot in safe mode and restart the Mac with the Mac OS X dvd in it? Or simpler than that: put the disc in, then restart while holding the "C" key down until you see the grey apple logo.

I moved NV* and GeF* from /System/Library/Extensions

How can I include files I moved ? a simple copie don't work.

I can't install leopard , it freeze or it give me a kernel panic when I boot on the DVD.

I don't know if the DVD drive is ok, so I'm doing a USB boot device to try a new installation.
 
I can't install leopard because "I think" that when I start with cd USB boot key (or the DVD anyway) , the installation software use the nvidia library (kext) and when this library loaded the system freeze.

I'm going to buy a new graph card , now I'm 99% sure that this is my problem.

What do you think about the ATI Radeon HD 5770 ? I read in forums that it works with MAC PRO 1.1

I changed the graph card and now the MAC boot normaly.

I bought ATI radon hd 5770 and no problem for the moment.

YOU ARE MY HERO!!!!! THANKS. Five Days I was working around the same problem. Finally I am able to boot normally again and I know what to to change about my MacPro 1,1 immediately ;-)
