Hello,

In struggle to use OS X Yosemite (and, hopefully, El Capitan) on my Mac Pro 1.1 I came across this thread - however, I have a few follow-up questions.

1. Do I need to buy an Apple branded ATI Radeon HD 5770? Or can I use an ordinary, non-Apple video card?
2. It says something about properly mac-flashed video cards - what's the process of flashing a video card?

I tried to use a newer, stock video card (I believe it was from ATI Radeon HD 9800 Series), but the screen remained black for days.

Unflashed video cards won't give you boot screens but will work in OS X as long as drivers are present. 'Flashing' means replacing the stock vBIOS with a Mac-EFI-compatible one, tutorials for some GPUs are available here and at netkas.org

'HD 9800' doesn't exist btw :p

Hi I am new here so I may be covering old ground, so please be patient. I have two unsupported 2006 mac Pro 1.1 running 10.7.5 one I can't afford to mess up and one to experiment with. I intend to upgrade to a more recent OS, probably Yosemite and later El Capitan (maybe).
I have acquired a PC version PowerColor ATI HD 5850 PCS+. Will this also run out of the box on Lion? if it does will it still work after upgrade to Yosemite or El Capitan or will it need flashing at any point? Not too worried about boot screens or Gaming etc, just will it work in general use?
