I have an early 2008 Mac Pro running Mavericks, latest version. Yesterday, it first displayed some graphics glitches, then froze. Since then, it only boots to the Apple logo, then instantly reboots. Couldn't get it into safe mode, always rebooting.

I swapped hard drives and ram modules with another Mac Pro (same model), and the same thing keeps happening. So I am guessing the problem is not with the boot drive or ram. My first thought was video card, but it still displays the grey boot screen and Apple logo just fine.

After a failed boot attempt, I put the boot drive in my other functioning Mac Pro, which promptly told me there was a problem with the last boot attempt and gave me the following Error Report. Unfortunately, I am not computer savvy enough to make sense of it. Does this log contain meaningful information to you?

    Thanks for any help!

UPDATE: Swapping video cards finally transferred the problem to the other computer, so I guess there is my answer.

Is it common for a faulty video card to still output a signal to the monitor (boot screen), but then keep it from properly booting even into safe or recovery mode?

if you have a gt8800 nvidia card, yes it is common, a lot of failures/problems/ are reported.

    Yup, that's the one.

What's a good replacement card that one can still buy today?

Strange, that's the one in the working computer. I guess the log was made (completed?) when I switched the boot drives back?

Either way, the faulty one is the 8800GT.

There are a very large number of video cards that can work in your Mac. On this forum, you find info on just about all your video card options.

If you wish to try and salvage your 8800GT, try searching Google for "baking 8800GT". I've done it before and it revived my 8800GT.

You can find genuine Apple Radeon HD 4870 on eBay for $70 or $80. Better performance than the HD 5770 (higher memory bandwidth.) Very compatible. The Apple ones have a single DVI and miniDisplay port. Don't mess with flashed units or flashing at this price.

    Thanks guys.

Found a refurbished genuine 4870 with one year warranty, so I went with that. This was the second 8800GT card that crapped out on us, so I'm happy to be done with those cards. :)
