This is a weird one for me. I am not sure where to start because I am not seeing any kernel panics being generated in the Logs folder. The computer seems to work just fine when I am using it and I don't allow it to lock, turn off the screen, or sleep. I just installed the latest security patch for 10.14.6, and this may have made the problem worse.

In the past, crashes with automatic reboots have occurred due to issues with cpuPowerManagement. Now, I have no idea because my only cue to the system hanging or crashing is the hard disks shutting off. The power LED will pulse slowly like it would if it were asleep, and the fans are still running on the system.

Any attempt to wake the machine fails, no input on the keyboard or mouse will work. Pressing the power button instantly turns the machine off.

I am unable to see if there are any crash messages on the screen when this occurs, that may be because I am using an RX 580, but not the Sapphire card that supports boot splash.

I can collect any information necessary and perform any steps needed to further identify/fix the problem. I have attached the most recent kernel panic (this was prior to the security update i applied today), but the behavior of the system when it produces kernel panics like the attached, the computer is sitting idle and it probably has to do with CPU power management as I had mentioned, but it will recover and reboot to the login screen. Currently it seems to just sit on a black screen.

Thanks in advance.

Do you have another kind of GPU for test sake ?

I remember problems with the AMD Drivers where one must adjust the amount of Ports in a .plist for HD7xxx R9/xxx for sleep issues.

Another thing is usb hardware. Hubs that prevent sleep and such.

Nvram and Power Managent reset done ?

I have a few older Mac cards (4870 and GT 120, neither of which are fully compatible with the newer OSes), also have plenty of PC based cards that could be tried.

I also do recall the need to modify the ports for the card. I cannot remember if this was ever necessary, and this problem wasnt present initially.

As far as USB devices, I have my 30'' Cinema Display USB ports and an SD card reader connected. Mouse and keyboard are bluetooth.

I will clear the NVRAM and SMC and leave it to go to sleep again.

I suppose its possible this bug is finally affecting me with this quite large security patch I just installed.

You could try the GT120, it just sluggish work on EFI Drivers but for a quick test run it fits.

I know the card gives at least a gui in Mojave

But remove the AMD Card physically for this test.

Ok, I will give that a try and use it for a while and see if this symptom persists.

The computer will not turn off the display or go to sleep either by timeout or using the Sleep option with the GT 120.

I tried it again with a 550Ti and it goes to sleep and wakes up. We might need to do the port fix and see if that makes it stop crashing

Well, so the gt120 is not useful for this test. Will write that down.

Btw interesting that a Fermi GPU runs in Mojave. Thought nvidia support started with Kepler.

Strangely, some of the Fermi GPUs IDs are present inside Kepler drivers and work partially for acceleration, but no METAL apps work. I think that @netkas found it last year, if I remember correctly.

GF100 kext is in extensions.

I tried a cheap Nvidia Quadro with Fermi with no luck earlier this year.

btw. this CFG_FB_LIMIT = 0 setting is still in AMD9500Controller.kext/info.plist

Maybe we still have this -must-know-amount-of-ports-bug-to-get-to-sleep bug

for details

Oh, believe me, it doesn't run well. Might be because there are no web drivers installed but not a very great experience, but it does seem to behave. I didn't note if the computer correctly identified the card or not.

I disabled SIP and applied this fix. I havent observed it acting up yet... I will consider this resolved and will update in a day or so.

Thanks for the help

I'm having similar issues with a 4,1>5,1 with a MSI RX 570. Was crashing during sleep before and with 10.14.6 latest patch I'm getting the black screen, sometimes even while using it. I assume there is some kernel panic that would show with an Apple GPU installed.

Yeah, something is funky with that patch. If you haven't given the CFG_FB_LIMIT edit a go, it's worth a shot because things are looking better for me now. There might be a crash screen that it is displaying that we can't see, but from what I could see no kernel panic was being saved to logs.

Still want to use it another day to confirm issue doesnt come back.
