Hello, I have the opportunity to purchase a Mac Pro 4.1 with the following specs for $300.

2 x 2.26Ghz Quad Core Xeon CPUs
8GB DDR3
500GB HDD
Nvidia GT120

I am purchasing this computer for the sole purpose of using Sketch (UI Software). I have a Mac Pro 1.1 with Yosemite installed but it is quite slow when there are many layers (designs) on the page. I know that I can upgrade the CPUs but it would also be nice to run El Capitan natively. Given that you were in my shoes, would you upgrade the CPUs in the 1.1 or purchase the 4.1 and sell the 1.1? At $300, the 4.1 is a pretty good purchase no? Thanks in advance.

$300 is extremely good for dual CPU 4,1. It's actually considered a very good price for even just the single CPU model.

$300 for a actual true dual core is a steal. Thanks for the face rub!
Why is it a face rub? I said great. Your 4,1 wouldn't be supported by next OS update. Flashing it to 5,1 would get your through.

Oh sorry lol. Actually i didn't see that emoji at the time of typing. Lol. But honestly. It's a steal.
After 5,1 firmware you are set.
It is indeed. I can't find one for less than $700 on eBay. Are you going to flash the firmware and upgrade the CPU's. I can't even imagine how fast it would be then. I'm waiting on a Xeon W3680 for my 4,1 but it's only a single physical core. Oops I keep replying on the wrong thread sorry about that.

Good price, you may get about the same or more for the 1.1 if your lucky (at least in the uk they sell for about that)
you can grab a GTX 660/670 for almost nothing now on ebay and you may not need more ram but if you do it's fairly cheep i got 32GB for £50 ish (less than $70 american)

but it might also be just fine for what you want.
(an SSD might be nice tho)

and dont worry about the os thing 1.1's can run the 10.11 so cant see why you wont be able to use the new one if you want to, if it's just a flag in the installer you may not even need to flash the 4.1 to a 5.1

The best I can find in my city is $590.

$300 is 50% lower! If I have that offer, I will buy it in no time, just don't let the chance run away.

Hey guys, really appreciate the replies. I was able to get the computer for a lot, lot less than $300 and if I'm going to be completely honest, didn't want to disclose the seller's asking price in case you guys were able to find the ad.

Everything works great and the computer is indeed a 4.1 with 2 2.26Ghz Xeon processors. I will be updating the firmware to 5.1 and installing X5670s and a GTX 680 or 970 as they've come down in price by quite a bit.

I'm super excited to own this computer. I will finally be able to use Sketch without lag!

Just FYI you need to have the Apple factory video card installed or the firmware update will give you grief. After the update your other video card should be fine.

I would buy that in fact I bought the same mac it was a 2.66 with a 640 gig drive on Monday for 400 dollars and that was a great deal so grab it. I also upgraded from a 2006 mac pro never upgraded the CPU's in it for 300 more I got much faster mac. Also Blu ray drive went in like a snap no need to run a sata cable. good luck

Thats a hell of a steal for a dual 4,1. I would buy it in a second as long as its not a scam of some kind.
You really scored, and congrats.
