Hey guys, i have spent some time hanging around in these forums to figure out how to successfully install a new cpu in my Mac Pro 4.1. I chose to get a Xeon W3570, as there was a good deal on eBay, near mint condition for 150$. Upgrade was very easy, and i was also quite happy with my results on the thermal paste. As is booted up for the first time, everything worked fine, and iStat showed my temperature around 37C° idle, 55C° under heavy load (encoding with handbrake for 15 minutes) But as i installed TemperatureMonitor to test my Ram temps, i was shocked at the results: Even though iStat shows 55C° for the Cpu under heavy load, TemperatureMonitor says that the cores run at 85C°-90C° !! Is that normal?! I have found a similar thread on these forums, a guy had similar temperatures for his cores, but nobody replied to his question till then. So my question here is: What are you guys getting on your stock/upgraded Models (4.1/5.1) in Temperature Monitor or a similar Program that addresses all the Sensors? Not in istat, as this only seems to show the temperature on the cpu-cooler. I really do appreciate your help! greeting from germany Zurec
smcFanControl temperature monitor shows 80 degrees max. that is when all cores are maxed out for hours.
Hm, that seems high aswell but not as high as mine. I've read some other threads, and i assume 90°C is quite hot but not out of the limits. What Mac Pro do you have? Is it stock or modified aswell? Anybody else with some full-load and idle temps? greetings Zurec
On my system w3520 quad 2.66 under ambient 35c my cpu idle is around 48-50 and load ~ 95c, after upgrade to i7 970 at same ambient i got only 43c and load is not more than 75c, so your situation i completely believe it temp come from cpu.
Well, i think i shouldn't be worried then. Anyway, some more load/idle temperatures on the single-cpu models would be cool. (no pun intended) Just to be safe. greetings Zurec
