    Hi all

I just upgraded my 5.1 (flashed) Mac Pro from 2.66GHz Quad to a X5670 2.93GHz Hex. I bought the X5670 because it has a lower TDP than the W3680 and the W3690. And because you can get used ones for like around $130-$150 on ebay. The entire upgrade process was pretty straightforward thanks to the tons of guides here and on Youtube.

Just wanted to check the temperature. I installed Temperature Monitor and I am getting the following temperature when IDLE:

    Ambient temperature: 36degrees Celsius

    CPU heatsink: 50degrees Celsius

    CPU Temperature diode: 50degrees Celsius

Is this good? What should be a good temperature range for the CPU?

    What's your fan speed?

That temperature is perfectly safe. I am not sure what's the X5670's thermal characteristic looks like. However, my W3690 will idle at around 44C if ambient is 36C, with both intake and exhaust at 600RPM, and booster fan at 900RPM.

How do I check fan speed? Do I need to use a third party application? My fans are pretty quiet so far.

    Fan Speed

Yes, you need a third party application to check your fan speed. I recommend program called Mac Fan Control. I use this on my Mac and it works great. It is not on the app store. Yow have to download it off the internet.

Those temps look all within range to me. Even higher would still be safe.
